Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Morning!

Just back home from dropping DD(12) off in Stratford. Roads were cr#p. We got about 6" of new snow here. Light fluffy stuff.

TerriO is right,, lower the humidity in your coop to help prevent frostbite..

LOL! Jim you are an evil man! First you say I am right and then you bring up "my mistake!" I sure hope that is the most serious one I ever make...not likely me thinks!
Enjoy your time in the snow sir...dont run over any chickens! (did you really do that?)

Coop cameras are all set up!!! Yeah! The only problem now is-my coop looks filthy!!! lol I use the deep litter method and between all the feathers all over and the poop on the roosts which I clean off at least once a week but still not sure I would want to show these to family that are non chicken people.

The dog dish we have is metal. I have a plastic one too that the dogs are using. A friend of mine just happend to want to get rid of them.

I have a metal one too but hated constantly cleaning out the filth & it just didn't hold enough water. I found that a plastic one gallon chicken waterer fits right in the dish perfectly and keeps it from freezing. Works great!

As for the frostbite, I read somewhere to use bag balm or utter balm on it instead of vaseline. Vaseline will help to protect against getting frostbite, but I guess the balm will actually help heal it? Once they do have frostbite on their comb, you'll see it get dark every winter. Moose had frostbite before I got him. I haven't tried the balms on him yet, but regular neosporin works ok. You have to apply it often though.

Hey Terri, who do you want to breed Moose to?

Good morning! Nothing much to do about frostbite; get some more ventilation to reduce the humidity in your coop and it shouldnt happen any more unless you have very fine points on your birds' combs...some say you can put Vaseline on to prevent frostbite...sounds messy to me!

I read so much and now cant remember much of anything...stayed up way too late and was woken this morning by the snow plow. The candy turned out great last night and the turkey is done too. Now I need to debone it and figure out what I am going to use in place of Lipton Onion soup mix...(it has wheat) So I can make the cream gravy. I think I will toss together a baked bean casserole too.; then a veggie tray along with chips and dip and chips and salsa. That part I am looking forward to...cleaning the house, not so much!

Carol I didnt know about those breeders either. I see that they are coming to the swap in Jefferson though. I wish she had more info on there (and pics) of her wins at the shows. Do you know where the place is? I think I might know who the girl is. How many kids are named Persephone?

Cind you just go right ahead and whine! We are here for ya. Everybody needs to once in a while...you must go fairly crazy living there with all those MEN! I say stop walking on eggshells and just be yourself. It is your house too!

Well, I think I need another cuppa and maybe some food too...I think I ate too many pieces of candy! NJoe--I want to see you in those fur hats at the chickenfest! We are pretty early in the spring this year so you might be needing them!
Have a good one all! TerriOlotstodoandnodesiretodoit

Which reminds me I need to call you about a bird you took a pic of and posted a while back.

AND I found this, not sure if you are interested I texted you though.

2 Russian Tortoises - free to good home (Janesville, Wisconsin)

[email protected][?]
I have 2 Russian Tortoises I will give to a good home. One I have had for 15 years. She is about 6" in diameter. I have a boy that is 4" in diameter that I have had for 5 years. She has given eggs several times but the boy is not quite big enough to fertilize the eggs so when I incubated them, no luck. But someday he will catch up. :) They are both very healthy and live in a huge aquarium with all the proper lighting and bedding. They are sweet together, and they enjoy the company of each other. The aquarium is not included. I use the Veterinarian Dr. Chris, a traveling vet out of Evansville. She comes to my home to treat them. This is her website: Their diet consists of Collard Greens, Kale Greens, and Turnip Greens, other veggies and a very small amount of fruit once in a while as a treat.

I am attaching pictures of the 2 tortoises. If you are interested, please send me your telephone number and I will call you. I live in Janesville, Wisconsin.

snow is all pushed around.. It was a beautiful day to be outside..

No TerriO, I didn't run over a chicken.. but if they are loose , they have no fear of the tractor.. there are enough obstacles to avoid without watching out for birds to boot..

the peacocks were doing their strutting thing when I was feeding the birds.. they were only about 3 feet apart and they let me walk between them.. sure is a far cry from when I got them and couldn't get within 50 feet of them..

one of the RP turkey hens was in my path when I was walking with a bucket of water.. she just stood there and let me walk right over her , right between my feet.. I would say I have some super tame birds, eh ?

Thanks for the advice on the frost bite.!!! I have not been locking them up per say at night, but they do have a nice area in their coop to keep warm..
Talked to my mother-in-law, who I deem the "chicken queen" too :-) said the same things. Guess that's what we get for living where we do

CC: What kind of video cam do you have? I can't seem to get the recording or snapshot to work? At least they aren't saving to the location I specified? Do you have Uniden Guardian?

I have Lorex. I rarely use the recording feature anymore, but I did when we first got it. It worked fine for me, but it really doesn't have too much room to store many videos. Do you have a remote with your base station?

The base unit should have come with a cord with red & white plugs. You can use these to plug your base station directly into your TV, kinda like hooking up a VCR or DVD player.
