FT - Yes, I ck'd Cutlers. But I had been looking so much I got burnt out and didn't pay much attn to what they had. Just mainly scanned thru it.

I was gonna say somethign else about incubators, but the dog peed on the carpet and I had to take them out. When I came back, this was still up and I've no clue what I was gonna say. Eh. Oh well. The only part that I can remember is that I can't sit here and try to jerry rig something, as I wouldn't even know where to begin. It doesn't matter if there are learning sections or not, I gurarantee my first few hatches will not turn out because i'm trying to play around with it to see what works, what doesn't, tweak this, troubleshoot that, temp's too high, humidity's too low, look it up see what other people suggest. I just don't have the time or energy to do all that (much less the brain power

), and then loose out $$$ because all the eggs I bought flopped. I am not mechanically inclined and I completely suck at tweaking or rigging things, may as well build from scratch. Quite frankly, that defeats the purpose of buying something that works. I'm paying money for something that works so that I don't have to. As one person said; I should be able to just plug it in and forget about it. If it comes with a temp control, a humidity control, and a turner, what else would I need to do aside from check in from time to time to make sure that everything operating normal. It does the work for you. Or it should. That's what I'm paying the extra money for. {{shrugs}}

So I guess the bottom line is how much do you want to spend? CC's incubator only holds 7 eggs but if I remember correctly, CC correct me if I'm wrong, is a set and forget.
Check out that little yellow book for $7.95 that was in my link at Cutlers. Great little book for learning about hatching. My very first hatch with my hovabator turned out great (barn yard mix of my own eggs) I followed the directions that came with the bator. It wasn't until I started reading what everyone else was doing as far as humidity etc that I got into trouble. Some people swear by doing a dry hatch.....
So, my advise would be a beginner hatcher is don't worry about a seperate hatcher. One bator is enough. on Day 18 take out the turner.....like I said follow directions and you'll be fine.

You will still have to monitor any incubator.... Room temps, outside humidity etc can all play a role in what you may need to do to assist your hatch. Add water during incubating and at hatch.
Of course you will also want to monitor the temp in case the things go hay wire !!

With the genesis 1588 the fan is built in, as is the heater. There is no coil on the top which is what I didn't like about the fleet farm or farm fleet ones.

Bleach is fine to use. The only concern with styro is that it is porous (sp) but if you spray with a diluted bleach mix and let it soak you'll be fine.

Nothing lasts forever but if you take care of them they last quite a while. I don't know how mine got a huge chip out of the corner but I just put a sock between the top and bottom by the crack and it worked great.
Because of my neuropathies (feeling) in my fingers I tend to sinkthe tips of my finger nails in to the styro so mine don't look the prettiest..... What's nice about Cutlers you can get extra parts there for them.

Could be a vitamin deficiency? If it't not eating it could just be very very weak. I've had chicks that for some reason just don't eat no matter what and eventually die.... tg it isn't very often. Don't know what else to suggest but to feed it maybe some wet food mash with vitamins and electrolytes added. ????

Just got off the phone with Marshfield Clinic in Weston.... going to see a Pulm doctor at 11am tomorrow. Screw Aspirus in Wausau.... they never called me back....... My heart doctor suggested Marshfield when I asked him where should I go Antigo or Rhinelander hospital if I should need an ER for my heart. He said MARSHFIELD..... then I said, but of the TWO which one....Antigo or Rhinelander.... again he said MARSHFIELD !!! Sooo away to Marshfield I go... not waiting weeks to get into Aspirus in Rhinelander or Wausau... That's plain Bull !!!! They don't know me to know that that's not acceptable.... and not calling me back..... no brownie points there..... I sent in ET's Cpap card for them to analyze and called twice now..... No answer, letter... zilch !!! We love his doctor but what gives........................
Now I'll be in Marshfields system... just need to find a good cardiologist there one day.....This getting old SUCKS Big Time !!! Ok, now I'm going outside.. so much for an early start today !!!!

My easter egger pullet has a situation and I have no clue what to do for her. She is gasping for air and making a crying noise. She was doing it some last night too, but now it's non-stop and she is hiding in the coop. All the rest of the chickens in with her are completely normal. There is a slight gurgling noise sometimes as well, but eyes are clear, no snot or mucus anywhere. Suggestions??

Lisa-Do you have Vetrx? Since its all natural, if there is every a doubt I give this to them for anything that could be breathing related (plus it makes everything smell good!) Is she gasping or panting? :-S Sorry

An old farmer in the area suggested I keep this on hand for just about any situation. Do you have some save a chick?
Just a suggestion untill someone has better answers than me... I havent yet experienced much.

A lady that brings her kids to 4-h by me had her chickens dropping left and right. She tried everything. They stopped at 3 after I gave her some.

She's definitely gasping and making this terrible crying sound that makes my skin crawl. I don't have any medicines here. I would have to run to fleet farm. I may have to use a syringe to get her to drink though. I don't think she's interested in anything right now. I can go get some Sulmet though if they have it at Fleet Farm. They do have it on their website... Do you suppose it's safe for ducks? They drink a lot of water...
