question for general discussion
Have any of you ever had a problem with gape worm? Does any of you refrain from feeding your birds worms because of concerns they might get it?

Just curious if this is even a problem in the north. I meant to ask this before Lisa's hen got sick.
Personally, my girls follow me around when I'm in my herb garden waiting for me to toss someone a treat. (I get a kick out of watching the ensuing game of keep away)
Besides, unless they spend their entire lives in a wire cage how do you keep a bird from eating worms???

still cannot load pictures here..

I transferred a few 3 day old chicks to the outside brooder and put 4 new keets into the TV..

I also released all prisoners.. guineas, chickens and peacocks..

I am finished collecting eggs to hatch..

I had a woman come out and see my black hens.. she is coming back tomorrow morning to buy all of them.. I am asking $5 each, but it she takes all, I will let them go for less.. most of them do not lay eggs, so I will be glad to not have to feed them..

Sandi, If you find some Brussels Sprouts, I would take a half dozen or so.. I can meet you someplace to pick them up if you are pressed for time.. Don't go out of your way,, they are not that important,, I wonder , if I planted seeds, would they make it ?? worth a try for next years project..

I have an old 3 HP Hahn Eclipse roto tiller in the lean to.. maybe I will drag it out and see if it will still start..

I am looking at the peacock pen as another "green house" Not enclosed, but fenced in,, a good place to plant lettuce so the birds cannot get to it.. and it is well fertilized already,, and weed free, too..

that pen is built over where my garden was many years ago,, so it should be rock free..

so many ideas,, and no ambition to do most of it..

still have rocks to pick in the new garden plot..

I think I will take a new coffee break.. My first one didn't go very well.. I was outside watching the birds escape, and I knocked my cuppa mug over.. maybe this time I will get to drink some of it..

Vicki, you don't,, and you don't worry about it..

I am with you Sandi,, I do not enjoy watching fainting goats flop over.

for those of you who joined after one of my disclaimers, here it goes again.. I do not use LOL < Rotfl, little yellow funny faces etc.. If you cannot tell that I am just ribbing you, then that is your problem.. Just how dirty are you going to let it get ? that was a ribbing.. If I was talking to you in person, I would have said it to your face.. I do not sugar coat my sentences.. I was in construction for over 40 years, and I just didn't have time to do that.. for instance, Please step to one side and let that board fall to the floor instead of onto your head,, takes too long,, WATCH OUT !! works much better..
jvls1942: wow this explains a lot . . . many times when reading your posts I think "hmm sounds like my husband", now I know why he also spent many years in construction and before that as a meat cutter. Your definately one up on him though, he won't type on the computer for love nor money. And when it comes to the funny faces and all . . . what I get from him is the usual eye roll

(sorry couldn't help myself). By the way - he likes the pics of the green house, maybe that will be next year's project.
Tonight she seemed 100% NORMAL

I am still treating her separately though. Do tell me about these apple trees...I was planning on planting some more this year.

Tonight I informed my husband of the breeding pens I will be needing for next spring. Why? He asks. I was like how am I going to get the right hens with the right rooster's if I can't separate them from the others? He asked what the nice big coop he built was for? So, I told him that was for the layers only. Or I could just sell those...(he likes those chickens). After much explaining and some weird looks he started looking up materials. He just finished a terrific A-Frame 6x16 chicken tractor and as a reward I waited a few days, a week even, to let him know of this new and exciting project. As a bonus I said I only need a rooster pen before winter, but added how much easier it would be to just get it all done in case the weather doesn't cooperate next spring. Oh boy am I going to pay for this....and not in cash either, lol.

Lisa
LMiller: happy to hear your little one is doing better and your conversation sounded similar to the one with my husband, only his response was something like "Sandy, I think we're good on coops for a while" plus our neighbors are pretty close not sure they would appreciate us having roosters. After Jim's response to me on the broody bantam, and our experience with our Delaware (such a good mom) he is planning on building us a nice little broody coop

"Latte" is still with us this morning and i was able to mix some of the medicated water with food and yogurt and she ate it with a virocious appetite.
Angiebubs: so good to hear

kristp: are you having your sale tomorrow too? Saturday is looking rather busy for me, but I'm getting off work early tomorrow and love to stop by on my way home.

Yes to tomorrow and Saturday. As long as hubby is around to take kids to bday party, we will be open until 5, otherwise 4/. Would love to see you!

Quick note: cocci outbreak in full force. 1 dead yesterday. 2 dead today. Just saw bloody stool in the coop. I put corid in the watered last night. Not sure how many I'll lose before it gets under control...

  1. I would like more information about this too. Thankfully I take samples in twice a year with the dogs samples and have been worm free.

Sending a quick hello from Tulsa! Hope the child is taking care of my chickens. Hot and sunny here!
Do you show this weekend? Hows it going?

I am so sorry Heather. That totally sucks.

Interesting reading: "The Chicken Health Handbook" by Gail Damerow: Both Cocci and Mareks disease are found in almost every chicken flock, it is when stess, move, new strain (when adding new birds or brought in on clothing or shoes), or wet/dirty environment, that causes the nature balance to get out of whack and cause issues. Reading further, besides treating with medication, when there is a cocci outbreak it is important to try and keep sick birds off of bedding/poop on a wire floor, and make sure water stays as clean as possible. Thought I would share.
I bought an inexpensive wire cage today that I put on blocks, and side attaching water/food dishes.....I was able to get Latte to eat some more out in the sunshine before putting her back in their new cage. The other still isnt showing any signs of sickness.
