Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Questions for the "chicken gurus" . . . I have been feeding Nature Wise chick starter to all of my birds since the June 6th hatch of my Delawares, since everyone is in the same coop and run. I'm thinking of getting one more 50lb bag of the chick starter which should last me until the end of August. The little buggers will be about three months old by then, is that too young to start them on the layer pellets? I ferment the chick starter and will do the same with the laying pellets. Thanks in advance
Layer is for just hens that are laying.

Chick or grower is perfect for all other birds, even old retired birds not laying. Layer feed for birds not laying can be problematic and lead to all kinds of issues.
Deli I believe the eggs do darken as the bird ages...... but don't quote me on it......
Thanks..I sure hope so

They came from this dark of an egg..yet that egg is the color of the second row on the right

The chicken gods look down on me!!

I don't know what I did wrong.... another pullet down, well limping. Not taking the risk of letting her walk around like last time, separated. That's just my luck..

How old? Had the same issue was Mareks, pullet was not affected until 12 weeks of age started limping on one leg and then after 3 days almost total paralysis. Hope yours is not the same.

someone told me that there is a international poultry show in portage wisconsin this year. i was just wondering if that was right and if anyone has been there what is it like.

Hi!

Yea, I'll take almost any feathers, I don't think I'll need the little fluffy ones, but some nice white ones would be nice, (I realized I don't have any white chickens! LOL) I'll be making metal tipped quill pens, bookmarks, and hat decorations. I'm going to attempt to teach myself how to cut quill pens too. I may come up with more thing too. A batch is what ever you feel like sending, maybe stuff a large envelope or a small box. You can let me know what you think they are worth if like. The idea is to be able to provide an inexpensive souvenir.

Thanks again!

You can strip the little fluffy parts from the feathers so the smooth part and a "stem" is left. (for earrings, etc.)

I think my rooster is eating eggs. I'm not sure but I'm mighty suspicious. I put one of the store cams on the back porch this afternoon and aimed it at the chicken tractor where the hens are now laying. I've seen hens sitting in there but I've been getting few (today none!) eggs. A few days ago I got two that looked like they had been pecked at. (Think I might keep the chicken cam back there permanently.)

I noticed that Danny is very, very interested in the nest after a hen comes down from it. He climbs up and looks around. I also haven't been getting the eggs I normally get in the morning from the nest in the coop. Hmmmmm!

There is no evidence of broken eggs laying in the nests - no shell pieces, no yolk or white schmears anywhere. Do you think he/they are eating them shell and all? Maybe just a dry spell for the girls? Seems like a little molting is going on. Maybe a combination of things? What's yer opinion, guys and gals?? What would you do?

Hi lulu
September 28, 29 I will be there! It will be my first show :) we will be there as spectators only. Hoping to learn how it all works.

Colton, we are waiting to hear your dads answer! !!!

Cind, good for you!

Slow day today!! Everyone must be pretty busy :) chickies are good here. 3 days of summerschool left! I took most of my vaca next monthe to spend some time with the kiddos. I can't wait!

Irish, I do think it is possible they are molting. I seem to have feathers EVERYWHERE. And a mild drop in production. Although I do have yet another broody.
But I think yes Dannyboy could be eating them gone. When I make eggs, I scramble a little bit extra and add in the shells. It is good protein. I feed it to the chickies. They eat the shell completely gone. Danny has no reason to go in there. Rae never goes in ours.
If I were you, id direct that camera right at the nesting boxes to find the culprit.
Good luck!!

I have a major molt going...only three eggs today. Glad my customer is going out of town.
Still have two Broodies though... Yuck.
Went to Yellowstone lake yesterday with my in laws so kids could try to fish( fail) and swim(yeah). I was the major sunburn casualty. Put sunscreen on, but must have washed off my back in the water. Little sore today.
Otherwise we had a good day and trying to gt stuff together for school pictures and registration and my first day of work. Busy week !
Hope all is good,
