A huge COLD morning everyone

serious frost this morning but it's ok, for here it's time. Don't think the chooks appreciated it tho.

Cuties and Terri - the littles seem fine this morning tho there was more bloody poop in their cage, tho not huge. Terri, I had spread that ceca excrement out a bit so you could clearly see that it was tissue not just manure but it's pretty representative of what I've been finding. Now maybe that puts to rest I am not just being an over nurturing mom, tho I really wish that was what it was.

Unkadan - if you're lurking, I did appreciate your input and totally understand. I guess I needed to have posted pics of what I was seeing sooner. Sorry for my possibly course sounding response, my frustration was beginning to get to me. I deal extremely well with just about any challenge when I know what is going on (even cancer) but not when I cannot find answers.
You first have to be able to answer the question before you can search for the solution.
Would really like your opinion on what you think if I'm on the right track after you read below.

After studying and researching more, and coming across a very recent post over in emergencies on a cocci thread by dawg53, I am going to start another round of corid.
I read in the Mercks (and other veterinary sources) that first there is more than one strain of cocci that would cause the ceca lining to be expelled if the infestation was severe enough. Also, that in severe cases of one of these strains, you don't see all the typical symptoms associated with infested chicks but what you do see is stunted growth, (if you could see them together it would be obvious), increased thirst (they both drink a lot!) and increased appetite (I can't keep their feeder full and they attack anything else I give them) often leading to the mis-diagnosis of worms if the intestinal shedding is not discovered, especially if it is "simmering" and not initially overwhelming the bird. The only other obvious symptom is sudden death. I have been examining as closely as possible all the sheds and have seen no sign of worms and, since the duration of this is now into at least week three, (that I am certain of) it would be logical to assume that one or both would be expelling at least a few adults.
I also learned that if the first round of treatment is not totally effective, symptoms will reappear within 2-3 days. Makes sense now and totally the exact same timeframe as when the sheds started reappearing. I also discovered the math was wrong on the dosage for the powder. I was giving 1/2 tsp. per gallon (the common dose for moderate) is incorrect. It should be 3/4 tsp per gallon moderate and up to as much as 1 1/2 tsp for severe. It would be so nice if someone other than the Canadians would put the doses, in English, on drug packaging for small flocks.
Anyway, since they have been on probiotics and protein for more than three days already, I am re-starting the corid at 1 tsp per gallon for 5 days. The vet manuals state this is the proper course and will do no harm as long as I take the other precautions as soon as the treatment is ended. One last thing, if this works, which will prove whether or not I am right, it is possible that the hen will have permanent damage to production ability. My guess on that would likely depend on how long she delays start of lay.

Ok, now I am off to Amazon to locate a copy of the veterinary book of parasitology and to ebay for a cheap microscope!!!

bumping this forward for TerriO
BTW- got the book, now looking for the microscope

YEP, thanks Cuties. I had already run across that. Unfortunately the Amazon they mention is Amazon UK as is all else mentioned and none ship to the US. :rant

Packers day here. Well, maybe. It's looking pretty sad right now.

Loving the rain today. W really need it. I know I have tons of tomatoes that needed picking, but a nice rainy day shouldn't hurt them. Will put the kids to work tomorrow after school. Spending all day tomorrow helping a friend set up her rummage sale. We are putting one together for next weekend. Tons of kids stuff to get out the door. I need to keep sorting, I know I have more stuff.
Just made some zucchini chocolate chip muffins and roasting some veggies for spaghetti sauce. Andrew has been begging for it because he loves my homemade stuff. Morgan won't eat it and hubby could care less... So work of love for my boy. He had a rough week at school adjusting to sitting still again. Really don't Want to medicate him for ADHD...has not been a full suggestion yet, but a thought that came up. Lts hope he can get it together for a better week. We add soccer to our already busy football schedule.
Chickies are doing good. I have a permanent broody....carol is going to stick some chicks under her. Sigh...was a nice our egg layer, but have not seen eggs since April or may because he has had three broods and still wants more. Little ee mix.
Say...at what age do guineas start laying eggs? Do their eggs look like chicken eggs? Trying to decide which boy I like better..think I have a pearl grey and a royal purple. The girl is either a royal purple or brown.

Violet--Too bad your birds are gone...not a very good friend I would say! Are you sure they were sold? Maybe she just let them wander about and they are still in the area? Why did you have them there if they are your therapy birds? I hope your new one didnt bring anything home to infect your remaining bird...since it sounds like you put them together right away...
we were in the prosess of getting everything straitend out, and I do think they were as I doubt 30+ chickens just wonderd off, the new little girl was in qaurentien at her old house (someone dumped them) if she had not spent 24-29 day isolated from her birds while showing no sign of deises/injury/parisites I owuldnt have introd them right now they are on a look dont touch basis and tiny dancer sleeps inside. They are still being very vocal twords each other or at least chicken is. so hopfully this all gose well... Oh and we got a preused huge doggy kenal/run for them to live in since right now they have a small wire kenel conected to there coop which is enough space for 2 birds but frankly the deserve more

Kristip ... You sound as busy as BL4 and Bigfam.....lol Have you looked into changing your sons diet.... I remember seeing something on Tv about the diet and ADHA.....instead of drugs. Don't ask me what show or what diet though.

Never had zucchini with chocolate.... must be good... there are always people making it. To bad I don't have any zucchini .....

Btw, TO and whoever it was.... I tried the Coconut oil on popcorn..... I kept craving it after you all said it was so good. I really couldn't taste it.... either could ET.. It was pure coconut oil.

Hmmmm.... so whats the big deal about it... I was disappointed...
I bought the oil because Dr Oz had a show on it. He said to replace half of your oil with coconut oil.... for the life of me I don't remember now why !!

So TO did your cleavage show last night? Could you cross your legs with that mini dress? We want pictures !!

The other day we went outside to go to town and there was a huge guinea under the van.... DEAD. It must have been on of my old ones. Looked like there was a big patch of feathers pulled off the back. Either a predator got to it or ????

Gonna try to harness up that pony today.... if ET will cooperate.

BL4, there was a beautiful black Morab 5 yr old 15.2hh mare at an auction today in Florence..... They had a brand new amish cart too. I would have gone to the sale but they didn't have any other horse stuff and I don't need another horse. If it was a percheron/Morgan I would have flown up there !!!! lol

Ok, gotta get something done today..... yesterday was a dead beat day !!

Okay checking my little cuckoos lump on her "hock" it is soft not hard, but can not distinguish that it is hot... Also checking a little further up the leg (maybe 1/2 inch there is an area of skin that is yellow maybe an area about the size of your pinky. Since these are Marans I know they are to be white skinned. So I punctured the area but drew no pus and also the lump. The lump bled very little and appeared a clear liquid. The yellow are was not pussy. I then applied a topical antibiotic salve and wrapped in vet wrap. I was thinking about a penicillin injection because I am thinking there is some sort of infection in that leg. Anyone have any ideas? Thinking I will isolate her in a crate to keep her mobility down and easier for me to grab her and inject...

Went to Samba's in Madison last night for hubbies 60th We ate way to much and today we are having a homemade German Sweet Chocolate cake with Pecan Coconut frosting. I need to bake treats for him to take into work so that will warm up the house. Also got a pot roast out of the freezer... My tomatoes are in the garden not going out there to pick them they can wait... Oh I love this rain.

Good chicken news

My mottled Java laid her first egg and it was good quality. I was sweating if because she arrived shortly after my flock quite laying and appeared to haven gotten Infectious Bronchitis from the swap babies from Illinois...

Also acted on the tip from either Kris/Rasp on the Emancipation acres lead. Added a sweet little Delaware and Easter Egger this morning. All done with additions to the flock. I am a happy chicken momma!

I think she meant that the 2 of your chickens wandered off, not 30 of them. They would be easy to spot if that was the case. Hope you can track them down. With caller Id and cell phones you should be able to find the number to who bought them unless of course your friend only used a land line.
Good Luck. I gave some bird to a friend once with the understanding that if she didn't want them I would get them back. She gave them to someone else.... said it was by accident... She said she got them back and they later died..... Hmmmm Makes you wonder who your friends really are sometimes. Lesson learned here.

GOOD PACKER DAY EVERYONE :frow

FRENCHIE - did you make it to farmer s market in Antigo yesterday? Adamskis was selling maple syrup by the pound again! Already had some from their spring sale but I still took 2 quart canning jars and it figured out to getting a half gallon of high quality syrup for $17. Not bad.
I think your swimming pool days may be close to over. We should freeze tonight.

We frosted the other night which killed off our pumpkin vines and anything else that was tender. With the probable freeze tonight it's time for me to dig my herbs and pot them up so they can start adjusting for their trip into the house for the winter. Good thing we got a little rain overnight.

My Neighbor, the one that got the other two Aussies, just came over and got our livetrap. Unfortunately we have a new neighbor down the road that has no respect for their pets and let them run loose. I went just yesterday and had a talk with them because I chased their big cat (think I mentioned the first incident on here, think wet kitty ) out of my chicken yard twice!!! No apology. All she said was its hard to control where a cat goes but after I said I can't have it going after my chickens so next time it might have to go for a ride , she said she would try to keep it inside. I did SAY that I saw no collar or tags so.does it have its shots and she said it does even tho the idiot pit bull that was jumping on me the whole time wasn't wearing anything either. Anyway, All I, my good neighbor with the aussies, lost one of her red hens that had just started laying the other day and she is convinced after finding the "leftovers" it was to this cat so they plan to trap it and make it go bye bye.

Well, Sun is trying to come out so I better get outside and check on my chooks and dig up some plants.
