Yes. In my experience you can house guineas with chickens without difficulty. Quality space in the coop is essential to health and harmony, but in my coop the guineas and chickens roost together in close proximity with no more problems than chickens alone.

Hey there. I defeated my fox problem and got a few more girls to fill the coop! Yeah! Question.... i am having a hard time with nesting materials. My coop is a sand bed and I have paper shredding in the boxes but the little guys and the roos play in it and toss it everywhere driving me bonkers!!! What else can I use.. i prefer avoiding straw or hay for cost, bug and hygiene issues. Thanks!! Oh... does anyone here have or know where I can get some turkens? Or naked neck mutts?

Maybe pine chips would work. We use straw. I know a guy in the Rosendale area that has good turkens. If you like I can see if he is selling any. TerriO has some naked neck types

Anyone got tips for a friendly and reliable LGD breed that can stay within a 40-acre unfenced farm?

What are you expecting the dog to do? Are you looking for predator control - if so, what predators? do you want it to protect the farm or just its flock? what animals do you have? 40-acres is not very big for many of the LGD breeds, not saying it wouldn't work though.

A friend was telling me the other day how wonderful her Marrama/Lab cross dog was and how she never left their 80 acre property. It turns out her neighbor a mile away has the dog at her doorstep everyday at 10:00am looking for a handout, playtime with their shepherd, and a swim before heading home.

I just happen to have a couple of Maremma LGD,, I am on 9 acres with a neighbor on the 10th acre in our corner of the 40 Acre..

You have to teach the dog the perimeter of your property,,
Gus seldom leaves my yard.. at least in the daytime,, I leave him out all night alone,, then I know he travels farther out onto the 40 acre parcel..

I have seen him across the road only twice in over two years..

our Anatolian female never left the immediate yard,, once in awhile she would wander out onto the road.. she lived to be 16 years old..

I don't have any experience with any other breeds..

I feel that all you have to do is teach them what part of the world belongs to them and they will protect it faithfully ..

I would be very upset if the neighbor a mile away was giving my dog treats..
actually, I asked the next door neighbors to not feed him.. I would much rather they chase him home..
