Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Nice kraut cutter Stacy...that's a good o'l boy for sure... been busy here like always.

The Asian beetles are relentless here this year...they ruin being outside when they are this bad.

Venzun tenderloin stir fry tonight...garden carrots, green peppers, onions...with store bought celery and garlic...over a bed of white rice....

Have fun, stay safe...bigz

I hope you mean that they aren't always like this! I am new to WI, first autumn here and I was just floored when they all came at once. Craziness. Or maybe it's the recovering city boy in me that just needs more experience. :)

Our girls are 8 wks old now. Have been letting them free range for the last couple of weeks [1]. Feed consumption has gone way down since we let them out, but I think it's a combination of way less spillage with a new feeder I got plus all the tasty grass and bugs to scratch around for. They stay pretty close to home and have a favorite tree that they run for cover when they hear a crow or something like that. :)

[1] Bad chicken parent? They were able to push through my poultry netting so I took it down so they won't get hurt, and didn't have the heart to take their freedom away.

Quote: there is no proper age to let them free range..
when a hen takes her babies out they start free ranging at 2 or 3 days old..
I always let my chicks (the ones without mothers) go free ranging when they don't need supplemental heat.. and if the day is warm enough, they go out earlier ..

The beetles seem to take turns being plentiful and bothersome around here. Some years the Asian ladybugs are not so bad and some years they seem to cover everything that has sunlight on it. Other times the stink bugs are dominant and still other times the box elder beetles steal the show. The Asians are not too bad by us right now - we seem to have an even mix of beetles to contend with.

Just got home from a wedding in Illinois and the girls were chomping at the bit to get out of the coop. Couldn't find anyone we could count on to both open and shut the coop at the proper times but we did have a couple of people who looked in on them every day and gave them food, water, and treats. Sent the Tres Amigos to freezer camp just before we left. I kept the feet to roast for dog treats - has anyone else ever prepared them for dog treats? How did you do it? (I know, I know, it's not going to help keep Riley from chasing chickens - I figure that's a lost cause so they might as well not go to waste.)

Soon the feed bill will go up for both the birds and the bunnies. This year I've ground and frozen a lot of veggies from the garden for them. Also potted some kale and brought them inside the rabbit room so the critters have some fresh greens after most of the other plants die off for the winter. I may dig up a few more plants this week for good measure. Next year I'll fill some big planters with them just outside the barn door. I wonder if millet will do well inside the barn in the late fall.... hmmmmm...

Everything in the garden is done (except for the kale and a little bit of lettuce) so it's time to pull up the stakes and trellises and plow it all under. I'm starting to get some garden withdrawal already. Already looking at seed catalogs and planning for next year.

I think the Asian Beetles get worse once they start harvesting the soybean. I heard they were brought here to eat the "aphids" or some such bug in thee soy bean fields and once the frost hits or the soy beans are harvested they lose their food source and spread out... they do not "mean" to bite but are taste testing...
Thanks for the info CC you are the go to person, and shame on the people dumping kittens...While it is not animals the land behind our house has been vacant waiting for development and people dump everything... Televisions, couches, tires and a lovers quarrel that had photos undies and check stubs....so sad...
Irish when we had bunnies we cut the raspberries and gave them brush all winter along with apple branches when we pruned, they loved them

The Asian beetles & box elders are both crazy down here too Brent. The Japanese beetles weren't too terrible this year for once. Most of the trees actually kept their leaves all season.

Irish, DHs aunt always made soup with the feet. I never tried it but SIL said it was good. Personally, I see what they step in so I sure as heck ain't gonna make soup outta them, I don't care how clean they are.

As for helping with the feed bill in winter, you might want to invest in a lawn sweeper. DH bought one, and every time he mows, he will go collect some clippings & toss them into the run. The chickens go crazy every time. He also goes & collects clippings after a few days when it is dried out and we toss them into the coop for bedding. When we had our bunnies, I would rake up dried grass into garbage bags to store over winter & toss them a few armfuls each week. They loved it. Helped keep them from getting bored too. Ours liked chewing on fruit tree branches too.
