Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning! Had a nice chat with my GF over coffee...well over the phone and coffee!

My incubator is still swinging on temps...it is starting--no it IS driving me insane! I agree with Jim that the temp should STAY at what it is set no matter the outside temperature...like his oven analogy. But why does it change so rapidly when I uncover it? It must be leaking heat out so badly through the styro that the blanket insulates it too well? I can get a 4 degree temp swing just by uncovering it! So I guess when a hen gets off the nest the eggs probably drop a degree or two...maybe I dont need to worry that much...I just want to get these eggs IN!

On another note...I decided to go to Watertown today. Good store there (I hope) and DH ordered the wrong case for building dd25's new desk top...her motherboard will not fit! So we get to send it back...I wonder how much THAT will cost? Probably cheaper than the PO at any rate.
I sure hope you dont get riled again Jim reading the incubation thread....maybe I should post my troubles there and see what they come up with?

I am sure the answers to that would get you going good!!!

Maybe we all should have an incubation discussion at the bash...I will bring those inflatable boxing gloves that the kids have and we can all duke it out! Now THAT would be fun!
bun.gif

DrH--you must be really busy today that your message was so short. I feel cheated somehow
idunno.gif
I hope you get everything done that you need to...
Becky--I am getting some quail eggs in the mail from WhiteConfections in March. Maybe (if I have luck with he hatching) I can get some to you? He says he is shipping in March but I am going to ask him to ship closer to April--gotta get some success under my belt with this bator! WHat are you doing with your quail? Just for fun? I am thinking about having a taste of them...hey JIM--did'nt you say that you tasted button quail? How on earth did you prepare them and eat them?

I am heading to the swap at Jefferson early this time...looking for 2 female Zebra finches. I was also thinkin g about taking some roos, ducks and geese...but I think I will take the easy way out and make a sign to post!
ya.gif
NOt as easy as selling them there...but I hate all the prep of actually taking them and the barter and all that!

OK gotta go and read about incubation

You get your wish TO. I'm about as far as I can get till I shut the water off. Think thats comin on Sat. Today I finally understand the plumbing down there, there's a lot of dead pipe that confused me at first. But when I tear out it's all coming out. another thing I saw was that the original sub floor is 1x12 boards and from underneath they look really good on top of that is a layer of 3/8 plywood. Hope if I tear the plywood off I might be able to cover the 1x12's with 1/2" plywood. Thinking some leftover BBQ ribs for lunch then go out and plow.

Never enough chickens, eh? I just came home with 7 more hens..
1 rhode island red 5 barred rock and 1 unknown breed.. I know somebody looking for barred rock hens, so they might not stay here long..After the end of this week I will take the red stars out and leave the barred rock hens in with a barred rock rooster..did I mention I have barred rocks ?? LOL

I have a big (37 inch) Northern pike to clean for supper, so I had better get at it..

TO, or anybody, do you have any mature ganders for sale ? Buff preferred, but any breed will do .. also these people are looking for a couple of Royal Palm hens or fertile eggs..

DrH, have you considered covering your 1x12 subfloor with cement board? It is a good base for tile and it will never rot..

same with the first 8 or so inches above the tub if you are using a tub surround..and the whole wall where the faucets and shower head will be..

edit: fish is all cleaned and cooked and we ate like pigs.. I hate it when I do that,, now my gut hurts.. can't help it when eating fresh fish.. still enough left over for sandwiches tomorrow..

Early Evening All... nice fish Jim. Northern for supper sounds good to me! Suzie is making Venzun stroganoff for over a bed of rice, with buttered beets and home made buns.

I was happy to recieve my new addition of the standard of perfection. Pretty neat that guinea's are now in the standard, and it's the first time since 1874 that a new species has been included. They were admitted in 2005 and this is the first edition to have them. Just sayin.

Good Luck with the plumbing Doc and the finishing work.

I'm telling you Terri that the Bud will do ya good!

Not alot new here...that can be a good thing sometimes!

Time to eat. Be Safe... ~ bigzio

Well I am making a new version of venison burger soup.
I call it, "Venison burger, rice and what ever frozen veggies I have in the freezer". Oh and potatoes.
And making buttermilk biscuits to go along with.

I am getting a free partridge silkie roo this weekend. Cannot WAIT to get him. I have a buff I want to pair him to.

Laters all

YES JIM I HAVE GANDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are Toulouse not Buffs but they have the right machinery! Dont know what they are going for though--you tell me...just added the ounce of water to my bator...seeing what it does. YOu were right Jim--they were exactly 8 BUCKS at Wally. I bought the squarer one...thought it would fit better. I was surprised that they are battery operated though. Hope that is the right one. The temp on that digital one is about a degree higher than the mechanical one with the mercury (is that the right name?) that came with the bator. Nothing is happening after 15 mins....humidity is still the same...man I might be going back to hens......I never have to worry...until the babies hatch anyhow!

BTW: do quail hatch their own eggs? Just wondering

I have to go to bed...sweet dreams everyone...I guess tomorrow will be soon enough to set thew thousands of eggs I have on my counter!

Finally got my first Ameraucana egg today!

(Contrasted with the lighter of my Marans eggs that are for eating...the darkest ones are in the bator.)

Glad to see at least one of my Ameraucana pullets will give me some eggs. LOL The Marans gals have been laying sporadically through the winter and are picking up steam (or were until it became winter again, grumble).

Looks like I'll have some cockerels to rehome. Of the ones I hatched for NYD, I've got 2 Marans cockerels (one blue cuckoo and one splash cuckoo), one black copper Marans pullet (yay), a black Ameraucana cockerel, a blue pullet and a black pullet, and an unknown gender white silkie. Of the next small batch I've got probably 2 cuckoo Marans and 1 pullet, and an unknown gender buff silkie that I'll pass along to someone as buff isn't my color. Got 16 of 18 eggs showing good signs of development in the bator now of my Marans, so the nice even temps with the fan coupled with non-frozen eggs is certainly increasing my development rate, LOL. Of 11 birds from my last hatch, only 3 are pullets (gahrrr), 2 lavender bantam Ameraucanas and 1 black silkies. Gorgeous birds in that group, but a bunch of boys. :p

Excited to have my egg numbers on the rise. Looking forward to some diversity for my egg basket in my chick order this spring.

Better get to bed, tomorrow's my Friday and lots of work to do!

Well I did it again there was an ad for 2 free roosters..
I clicked on it.. one is a partridge silkie roo... he is coming home with me either saturday or monday

The lady is rehoming the other roo in the pic, he is said to be a wyandotte, which I don't think so as he isn't marked right, but doesn't have feathering on his
legs to be a light brahma...

So now I will have a buff silkie hen, and a partridge roo.

Hurley do you want your buff to go to a good home? I could trade you! LOL
