Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All,
I am just beginning to look into backyard chickens and the products that are available. Do any of you know where I could find good resources on the size of the backyard chicken market? Who would be good people to contact? I have been reading a lot this forum and found a lot of good information, but I am still looking for more! If you all could help that we be great

Thanks!!

Congrats on winning the Poster Keedokes!! That is awsome!!!

Today is day 18 and Lockdown day for the Dominiques and the Bantams. Hopefully on monday, I'll have pips, zips, and peeps!!! The only thing that has me concerned is that sunday we are expecting a storm with severe weather. I'm thinking the humidity naturally will go up, so I'm hoping that will not cause issues with the hatch.

I'm also trying not to freak out that the power might go out....Gahhhh!!!! Why did I want to hatch!!!! Argh!!! The anxiety!!!! Then, which brooder to put them in!!! Ahhhhh....did I say the only concern was high humidity????

So, my large TSC chicks are still an unknown breed. I'm also pretty positive that they are roosters. I'm thinking they might be a Freedom Ranger type of meatie. I'm leaning to putting them on Meatbird feed, get them fattened up, then processing them. It's unfortunate since I actually like those little buggers. I feel real sorry for any one else who bought those birds thinking they were Production Red Pullets 'cuz clearly they are not PR's nor are they pullets. It may still be a little to early to tell, but they are feathering in and they sure act roo-ish. The brooder they are in my dh calls "our box full of roosters". *sigh*
The Bantam TSC chicks are still unknowns as well, bit I think I have a silver Sebright. The other two are more them likely OEGB's but it is still to hard to tell but they are roos!!! Maybe one hen...maybe.... The Aseel has green legs so that sucks since I won't be able to show him unless he changes colors. He's a rather funny bird, but then again he is an Aseel...

The Orloffs are getting bigger and fiestier but I have a confession to make. While I love Orloffs and I want to help preserve the breed, I'm falling head over heals in LOVE with my Barnevalder babies. They are dang cute to absolutely beautiful chicks and so sweet! I've never had them before so I'm seriously trying to justify keeping all ten. I was orginally only going to keep a couple but know I'm thinking to devest myself of more Orloffs to keep the Barnevelders....

@dk1=Im glad your feeling better! Also, just as an FYI, unless Janesville has changed their ordinances very recently, chickens are not allowed in Janesville. I'm not sure if that applies to your location as far as Janesville goes. I know that your "subdivision" has rules. I know that last year the city council voted on allowing chickens in Janesville but it did not pass. The vote was 2 in favor 3 against. The awsome news is that the 3 "against" voters are no longer in office and were replaced however the 2 council members that stayed are pro chicken people. So if the vote comes up again, hopefully Janeville will get to have chickens. Where you will live may be different (as far as ordinances go) then the "city" itself.

congrats!!

Must Love, Keeping my fingers crossed that none of the things you are worried about during your hatch occur. I'm sure everything will be fine. I have to giggle when I read posts like this... I'm pretty sure most mothers were never so worried about birthing their own kids, and yet everyone I read about hatching is filled with angst. I'm not saying that your concerns are trivial, just everyone seems to go through the same roller coaster of emotions and worries. I'm thinking I don't EVER want to hatch!! Not sure I would survive it!

dk1 you sure hit the nail with the more worried than birthin your own child. Stupid chickens! MLH

for you! I've looked at the chicks in TSC and some just didn't look right to me as far as their supposed breed. Hope you got what you bought! Hope you saved your receipt then you can take them back, demand a refund for feed, worry, and elec bill!

It sucks falling in love with one breed only to find yourself...... kee it's OK to sound like a moron and often as much fun to be one, I should know! Congrats on being a winner of a very prestigious award! Everyone who knows you must be very jealous, I know I am! You'll have to stick it in the front window like Gavin McCloud did. Frajeilay, it's Italian. Hope you understood my humor?

jhedrichcentral! I guess I don't understand what you mean by BYC market? There all kinds of good people here that would help you get some birds to get started if that's what your asking? But I must warn you, You'll be glad you did! TO hope the DH does his chores. I know how you worry. PS watch out for paper cuts. I hate those! Kicked butt today in my T SHIRT!!!!!

Mmmmmm, something's cookin'...

Finally got a chance to make up a batch of Bigzio's Beer Bread.

Hope it turns out! Sure smells great.

Hey Carol-Thanks for the offer but we should be set, another friend of ours had some chicks hatched on Wednesday so now they are in our brooder and our chick has friends- but still wants us...... go figure and we just took it out of the incubator this am!

For most backyard chickens, it would depend on where they live, and whether they can have chickens or not. There is the Mad City Chickens, where are mostly located in Madison.
Other "urban" chicken keepers can only have hens.

Having young pullets or Point of Lay hens available would be HUGE, I don't know if you are seeking to create a niche or just to offer something unique...
Also having some of the rarer breeds, not having to be shipped, a few weeks old so as not needing super special care, that is a big seller, for those that offer them.

Call ducks, and East Indian ducks, you can't seem to find those as they go quick and are usually priced very high.

Coops that don't cost an arm or a leg, scratch feeds for ducks and geese that doesn't carry wheat which is supposed to be bad for geese...

I can think of other things.. just not right now. LOL

Hope this helps.

Nice Afternoon All.... Nice visit today Jim, eh! Thanks again for everything. The peeps are all settled in nice and happy go lucky...
I'll just let you know that the box of peeps ended up being 15 buckeyes, 4 americaunas, and 4 java/buckeye crosses. They are nice and healthy and thank- you too!

I got to meet Kristi and her wonderful children today, they are soo wonderful!!. OMG... so wonderful and just too cute!
The bunnies on the other hand....
I got the kennel set up in the basement, got the box they were in, out of my truck, set it down in the back yard to go into
the basement...close the side gate, and one of the bunnies jumps out of the box.. and is running around the backyard.
Thank goodness its fenced in.. so then.. i had to grab her... yes, she squealed as if I were a hawk.. needless to say
my dogs jumped about 3 feet... and may never look at a wild bunny again!!
