Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Just when I was saying I had no issues with my large fowl and bantams....
Can you guys look at my post here and let me know your thoughts on roo or hen. Roo behaviors, but could a hen do this? Probably sending with Carol when she stops by today. We dont need this crazyness here...
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/664744/help-is-this-a-roo

that is my morning in a nutshell. Crazy! Kids have the foolish chicks and silkie 3 week olds out running around ... so fun morning with chicks and weeds.

Good Morning ALL!

My chickens are 12 weeks old now and have gotten used to the "new" coop; windows, nest box, and the new nightlight! I have not seen any of them in the nest box yet practicing. The birds are still too young, but one of my red stars is sitting now when I touch her back. I sware that I saw one of my RIR roos mount her yesterday. What would a RIR roo x Red Star hen even make?

My chickens are becoming more cautious of us humans and run away when we come into the run area. They also are becoming more vocal. Of our 9 remaining birds, I know 3 are pullets and that 3 are cockerels, but the remaining 3 are undetermined. I wish the process of sexing were easier!!! UGH!

Any suggestions as to when we should cull the cockerels?

Morning all,
I was hoping to get some answers about the bedding I got at Fleet farm and treating my gimpy rooster and 7 week old babies, I'm taking back the 3 bags I haven't yet used and hope I get reimbursed for all of it, I'm also getting the Dejno's bedding company info and gonna do some chewing, this is ridiculous, I know for sure its the bedding because babies have the mites all over there cage as well, and they have no contact with the chickens or the wild birds either they can't get anywhere near them..............so anyway if anyone has any input I sure would appreciate it..............Kim

What type of bedding? Pine shavings? I am planning on stopping at Fleet Farm on my way home today to get both pine shavings and food....which of the two brands was it? Ugh..knock on wood-so far I've never had mites-would really be ticked if I got them from new purchased bedding! let me know what you find out.

Well had my morning freak out so glad that is over with... agressive hen acting like a roo. Hoping she calms down. Dont know where this came from as she has lived with the roo for a few months with no incident. We already have two silkie roos that get along well... a third roo would have put me over the edge... Plus of the 8 chicks living in my garage right now, pretty sure that 2 of the silkies are roos. One is almost 8 weeks and the other is 3-4 weeks but I can tell. And if I can tell in a silkie, well fate is told I think. Bummer. I think I finally got DH to not count the silkies in the chicken math so he is ok with that and me trying to breed them a bit.
Yes honey, there are 10 hens and then the silkies. ( 2 girls and 2 boys right now outside) so 10 birds! hehe. Although if the other 6 are hens we will be maxed out with our coop anyway.
The only 1 that I am 100% is a hen is my duccle. Beautiful and sweet little bird. Hoping the brown leghorn is a girl and we have an EE that I think might be a girl too. Who knows on the other silkies and cochin.
We really have a great mix of birds.

ok off to make lunch for the kids and me and back to weeding and bike riding!

Hey everyone, what a nice long and sun burnt weekend! Seems like we got a pile of stuff done, and still found a little time after the sun went down to enjoy myself and GF company! Unfortunately BF4m had a bad hatch and I feel bad for all the work and time she puts in to have things go sour at the end! So my Mother's Day gift to my GF went from ducks to goats...I kinda cringed a little as I wrote that last part. Either way it turns out I have a few connections among my friends to some goats and we got two billies for free and plan to raise them till fall and then butcher. They are really cute and it may be hard for a couple girls in my family to see them go this fall, but I will not be the one that is stuck carrying water out to them in the winter!

Even with getting a lot done this weekend yard work and garden is getting overwhelming! Our garden partner (who hasn't ever had a garden) called and told me he just bought 50 heirloom tomato and pepper plants. I better start looking for clean 5 gal buckets!

Have a great day,

Mazo

Be prepared to fall in love with the goaties! They're like dogs with hooves. I started with two...now I'm up to four! I know my bottle girls would happily live in the house, but that is a bit too far for me, hah!

So you GF wants goats to eat? I thought the ducks were going to be pets? But the goats aren't ? Or they will be pets until they are eaten ?

Hope your little girl is ok when she has to say good bye to her pet goat and then has to eat them.
Just hard for me to comprehend. Just sayin. Were you going to eat the ducks too? If not are you going to the bash? I have Runner duck eggs. Also Muscovy eggs.

DAS the ducklings are adorable!!!!

My Ameraucanas are good mothers. Got 34 feet of corn based black mulch to try on my garden. Its not so easy finding chemical free food these days. lol Went to La Crosse yesterday to visit mom. She is doing well, had a good time. Ate too much. Am beat today from the drive. Yikes! Its sunny out! Found 1 cherokee purple tomatoe plant and 3 other heirlooms but can't remember their names(one yellow, one orange and one red all beefy). I think I will plant them any day now. Two volunteer cherrys that are very tastey so I will let them be. Volunteer Connecticut pumpkins for the third year. Need to dig some up as they take over the place. Found a nice organic farm by Blair that I might go visit again. Talked to the guy for about an hour. He is thinking of doing a CSA out of Eau Claire. He has freedom Rangers, lost most of his layers to the hawks, and lives right by the game farm with all the pheasants. I wonder if Troll knows him. (Bear Creek Ranch) He said one day a pheasant was in his yard holding on to one of his cat's tails. He has a cute little B@W border collie only 11 weeks old. Two beautiful greenhouses and a couple of big fields. O yeah a house too.lol
