Good morning all!

Sunday afternoon I soaked my hen Hawkeyes backside for 15 mins...it felt full/mushy but not hard like an egg....gave her some "Save a Chick" via syringe to get it in her....but literally had to pick her up and carry her out to the yard for free ranging time-she didnt move and sat there sleeping.yesterday morning at 7 am I had to take her off the roost and outside-(usually they are all clammering at the bard door complaining to me for making them wait so long to get out-not her).
Last night after work I stopped at FF and bought Di(jdfhahfdafewraweh)trycin-10 antibiotics and was hoping my hen was even alive when I got home to give her some. When I got home she was perked up and walking around eating. Still a lil under the weather but much improved. I decided to not give her antibiotics unneccessarily since she seems so much better!
For future knowledge-is there a "preferred" muti purpose antibiotic to have on hand? Thanks for all the advice with her!!!!

I have an adorable mottled chick that is 3-4 wks old. It is either a mottled lavendar oprington or its possible that a hamburg mix hen was n with a LO hens/roo. The chick has a single comb though-isnt a rose comb dominant? How about if the hen was a mix of 2 breeds-is it possible the chick could have a single comb?

I'm so glad your hen has perked up, Ang!

Keep an eye on her, though. Hopefully it was just the heat?

I don't know which comb is dominant, but out of Mooses 7 kids, 4 have rose combs (from him) and 3 have their moms single comb.

ETA: if anyone was curious, Moose is a Dominique (rose comb) and the moms are orpingtons and Australorps (both have single combs).

CC-Good to know! I am so hoping that its either a mottled lavendar orp or else its female!!!!! If its a male I will need to re home. But "Susie" is absolutely stunning whatever she is!!!!

And I am hoping that whatever was upsetting Hawkeye (not a great name I know but it stuck with her).....is gone. Sure wish I knew what it was...maybe ate something when free ranging that upset her? It was more like something wrong with her tummy..she walked a lil strange-tenderly almost, and her droppings were very liquidy

I hope she's a girl.

You'll have to post a pic when you can.

I hope whatever was bothering her is gone too. She could have eaten something that didn't agree with her. The heat can cause loose stools too. Keep her on the vitamins/electrolytes for a few more days & keep an eye on her. Good luck!

ETA: I wish I knew of a great broad spectrum antibiotic to have on hand. I always have Duramycin-10 because it has a relatively long shelf life, it's cheap and it is the most easily available around here. Luckily I have not had much reason to use it, but it is good to have around. just in case

Forgot to mention FT about ET bringing in that chick. There's an episode of South Park where the character Butters tap dances to a song." I've got something in my front pocket for you" Heck Larry us! Angie glad to hear your hen is feeling better! TO so you made lunches around 10ish?

Amberflea that hat is just sooo cool! And what a perfect little head to put it on! Got the measuring, cutting, sanding, staining done. Some of the maters have blossoms. Know what you mean TO wanted some home grown cuc's for the salads the other night. Couple of different types of lettuce and spinach in tonights salad.

Hi all!!
Wow! Missed a few days and I had a ton to catch up on! Our internet, phone, and TV were all out yesterday. Apparently Charter had a massive outage. Ugh! I hate Charter..
Anyway, way to much to remember but a few things

FT- I'd take that pup in a heart beat---if I didn't have 8 dogs already! LOL

DrH- Awww come on now! Baby Seal Harts are the best! Especially from those white fun seals....

Ang- I keep a few Antibiotics on had. I have Oxtytetrecycline (powder form), LA 200 ( Liquamycin), and Penicillin. LA 200 and Oxytet are the same drug. One is water soluble and the other is injectable. Once they expire they become toxic so you need to watch the experation dates carefully on those. Penicillin is injectable and best kept in the reffer. It is a good broad spectrum AB to have on hand.
A side note though is with Penicillin, very, very rarely a chicken will be allergic to it. If that is the case, once you give the chicken a shot it will keel right on over. HTH

Well, got the lawn mowed today since it's nice and cool. I wish it was 48 degrees here! Weeded a little in the garden and have a volunteer tomato sprouting. I might just have to dig that one up and transplant him somewhere more planned then his current local! I think he is a white cherry tomato from last year.

Best be off!
Later!
