Witnessed A Vandalism CLOSE-UP (UPDATE Post# 116)

Tofu is nasty. I have a good friend that is vegetarian and she never says a thing to me and I don't ask permission to eat a steak either. I also have a former friend who used to get totally ticked at me if I ate meat in front of her. Hence the "former" friend part. I won't tell you what to eat as long as you don't tell me what to eat.

I have a co-worker who is the food police. I stopped him in his tracks when I told him that the chocolate covered espresso beans in his desk that he eats by the bagful are not health food.

I just don't get that mentality at all. I know we've talked about it here before Deb, but it still gets me every time. I am SO sick of people hearing I'm a vegetarian and acting all weird or paranoid around me, or even outright being MEAN and rude because they're on the defensive because of "those" preachy vegetarians that make the rest of us look crazy. I see standup comedians all the time making fun of vegetarians, and while I do laugh, I always think "We aren't ALL that way, geez". What the heck is it to me if we're out for lunch and you eat steak? Now if you lean over and start cramming the fork in my mouth, we'll have an issue (although I'd probably be uncomfortable with that no matter what was on your fork).

Another misconception about vegetarians is that we are all health nuts. I'm not a health nut at all! I'll be eating some junky thing like Pringles, and someone will say "Aren't you a vegetarian?" I look down and my chips, up at them, like "they aren't meat chips, I don't get it". I think the general consensus is that I only eat salad.

I know plenty of veggies that eat FAR too much pasta.

If a person only ate salad, they would not survive.

As a parent who would have sent my kids to court for smashing mail boxes, this case goes to show why I am that mean. Because my kids wouldn't dream of doing this. They learn early, they hopefully become adults.

Every time I've had dinner at the home of a vegetarian, it was delicious. I don't know if I could eat vegan though. They don't eat milk products do they?

What are other protein sources beside beans and nuts on a vegetarian diet?

CityGirl, I don't drink in public either. Now at home, I do like a few things, but out, no way, the drink costs more than the bottle. Give me a water, and the car keys.

Egg whites are one of the best pure sources of protein ever. An egg white on average has 16 calories and 4 grams of protien. Protein is 4 calories per gram. Pretty good argument for egg white omlets isnt it?

Well I was going to write that I'm curious "why do you have to decide to press charges or not?" if it was a federal offense THEY committed against GOVERNMENT property (the mail)? What does it have to do with you, who only witnessed it?

But lentils apparrently are the easiest, cheapest to produce, finest protein on the market. They come in different colors and flavors (French green lentils, Indian red lentils, etc).

Puppodums. Mmmmmm. microwaved and topped with jam.

See what happens when I begin reading a thread then skip to the last page?

Right; vegans don't eat milk products or any animal derived products, but vegetarians do.

Protein is EASY! People always ask this question, but there are so many sources: Whole grains (especially quinoa), beans, lentils, legumes, soy products, nuts, seeds, many dairy products like cheese, yogurt (especially greek yogurt!), nut butters, good quality cereals, eggs, and of course meat substitutes. Every meat eater I know has the "I had a tofu dog once it it was awful" story, to which my answer is always "me too". They aren't all good, just like there are regular hot dogs that are awful too. Some of the meat substitutes are yummy, but the key is how they're prepared. I've been over well meaning friends' houses who hand me a plain veggie burger and of course it's awful. I dress up my food as much, if not more than the next person. I marinate, season, etc. I am a great cook too, I don't mind bragging. My father still thinks I actually go out and buy real meat when I make him my homemade chili. He has no clue it's vegetarian. Every time he devours it and asks for seconds I consider breaking the news to him, but I guarantee he would suddenly "un-like" it, LOL, so I don't tell. But even without those substitutes, there is PLENTY of protein to be had.
