Witnessed A Vandalism CLOSE-UP (UPDATE Post# 116)

That's all it was. <OR>, the other possibility is that they were just SO into their rage against the boxes. They were REALLY charged up, outright wild. But another thing that makes me think they were drunk and/or on drugs is how long they stayed. I mean, I've never witnessed a mailbox bashing before, but I would expect a couple hits and keep going. These guys got out, were in the road, tearing the boxes off and then beating each one, they were there for some time. I would think you'd HAVE to be on something to be that brazen. But who knows....
 
I would think that unless they were looking/expecting a person to be there, they wouldn't have seen you. Kind of like hiding in plain sight. And they do sound like they were on something, good thing you were careful and hid anyway!
 
I still think it would have been hilarious if I just stood up. I've been talking about it with family and friends and we are all getting into fits of hysterics coming up with absurd things I "could have done". Stood up and pretended to be a zombie.... "BRAINS.....", stood up and just screamed, like a crazy shriek from a B rated movie, stood up and said in a really dumb voice, "Whatcha doin? Huh? Huh?" Stood up and roar like a lion....

Anyway, it's amazing how a bad thing can turn into a good thing, because I posted the new mailbox that I painted here and on FB and I now have several offers from people who want me to make one for them to buy! My father showed some people at work a photo of it that I emailed to him, and someone there saw it and wants one too! So I feel strangely blessed. Here I couldn't really even afford to replace the stupid mailbox, but I tried to make the best of it, dress it up to heal my soul, and now I can make some spare cash and make other people happy too! I love how karma works.

I mean, sure; in the moment it was scary, but it's over now and I don't really feel "scarred"; just annoyed. So I tried to explain to her that I really don't think this will have that much effect on me, that maybe I'll start carrying some mace for these late night walks, but other than that I think I'm fine. Then she told me I shouldn't go down to the mailbox at night anymore, and I had to explain to her that I am not going to be a prisoner in my own home just because some kids vandalized my mailbox, I mean, it's just ridiculous. She said she thinks I'm suppressing my "real feelings" about this.

Other than it being rather amusing, it also made me think about her and her life. God, if she internalizes every little thing that happens as "severe trauma", it's no wonder she's sick all the time, paranoid, stressed, and constantly goes to therapy. I honestly think that SHE needed ME to be completely traumatized so that SHE could have a crisis to deal with. Some people just seem to thrive on drama. No real point here, just an observation; your comment about having the right attitude made me think of it. If I had her attitude I would constantly be in a state of fear.

You really just shouldn't tell her these things. I still haven't told my mother that I was mugged at gun point 12 years ago. I figure it just makes life easier on us all. What she doesn't know she won't harass me about. Clearly your aunt can't handle such things either.

I'm with you. You seem a pretty level headed kind of girl. I mean, really... you have put up with the whackadoo garbage collector for years now and he's a fruit cake. This is a one time event and while it was VERY SCARY, you seem like you can handle it. Certainly take precautions. Mace, a handgun, big scary dog... whatever it takes. Just don't live in fear. Life has to go on.

heh, it doesn't even need to be a 'big' scarry dog! i have a 40lb corgi that hardly barks unless something disturbs him or he just gets the wrong impression from someone right from the start! he's proven to me that he can be friendly but still very protective over me, dh and my chickens and turkeys when he feels there is a threat! (still occasionally chases the birds though!)
