I tend to be cautious about tossing too. If I think it's a goner, but am not 100%, I mark it, place it away from the other eggs if there is room and give it a sniff test every time I open the incubator to candle. That one has that hazy look that doesn't look like it's alive anymore, but if it's not stinking, it will hurt nothing to keep it in just in case.

Nope, not stinky or leaking. There's a huge difference in progression between it & the others at this point & no movement. The cam didn't catch the grayish white outline around the larger part. Not much room to separate, there's 6 in there(small Brinsea dome). I'll keep watching and sniffing. Lol

In that case, I might toss. But stinkers are the ones with no question about them. No exploding rotten eggs for me! LOL

Admit it-1st time, at this point, you too were looking at incubator like the tree on Christmas morning, waiting for your parents to come downstairs! Lol
Day #22. -So R2elk locks down on day #25. Despite having bought egg turner, the more I read abt airsac issues, I didn't want them; I ended up leaving them pointyside down in egg carton shells and just turning several times a day. I have 5 perfect airsacs w/5 squished little birds that are still-yes, so far, still alive.
So..lock down..leave in egg carton shell upside down, or remove carton, lie on side?
I think I'm missing something in conversations, as some ppl say they move the bird to "the hatcher" instead of leaving in incubator.- What is meant by hatcher?

You can do either way and they will be fine. You can leave them upright in a carton or lay them on their side.

Some people use a separate incubator as a hatcher. This is great when doing staggered hatches since only the eggs ready for lockdown get the increased humidity. If all your eggs are at the same stage, it is fine to go to lockdown in the same incubator.

In my case, I have a cabinet incubator for the incubation stage and a cabinet hatcher for lockdown. The incubator has an auto turner. The hatcher does not have a turner since non turning is required.

Another benefit of using a hatcher is that the incubator stays very clean and does not fill up with chick dander or chick poop..

So exciting Sydney!!! I was just wondering how your hatch is going! I like laying the eggs on their side to hatch, as I feel like we have fewer leg problems if they have good traction immediately after hatching. However, I have hatched upright in cartons with holes cut from the bottom to facilitate airflow. I have only a little shipped eggs experience, but I think some experienced shipped egg people like to hatch upright in cartons because they’ve been so careful to keep them upright with a cosseted air cell during the whole incubation...

Best of luck with your hatch!!! :pop :pop :pop

Yep Sidney, Sounds exciting and like you are doing this hatch your way, just like a guinea hen does. All are probably a little different and when my two hens where taking turns or when one would leave the other would turn the eggs and then the other would come back and turn then back. As long as you are monitoring everything I think your all set. Here is a short video of a hatching I was going to get complete but my white panther of a cat jumped up and after I shooed him out the phone rang and 20 minutes later the keet was there. Good luck...

Awe! What a cutie!
Makes me excited for mine to hatch!
What is the black basket? Is that a type of egg turner?

Yes it is a turner and these eggs where from this last batch of eggs I got from my two hens. 6 out of 11 hatched after they had been abandoned for two days so I've got 6 keets in the garage and 6 out in the coop with their moms and dad. And in a few weeks I'm going to introduce them all, with barriers of course but it's going to be interesting.
