Sliced up some tomatoes for our girls today....What fun! It was like watching a childrens soccer game...ORGANIZED CHAOS!!...a lot of dust, cluster, hollering and general fun. Also introduced a cracked corn heavy sunflower mix (small amount). They now understand to haul a$$ to the shake, shake and chook, chook!

Why didn't someone tell me about these wonderful little people before now. I had chickens as a child, but never really appreciated them as the true individuals that they are.

I get excited on my drive home from work...knowing that the fun will soon ensue.

I have 6...I need 10. HOOKED, I AM!

I got home from work today (a little later than usual) and three of the girls were sitting on the shelf looking out of the window ....raising heck! Pretty much chicken cussing me for being late.

I think I made up for it with the treats.

I just gave my girls (and boys) tomatoes for the first time last weekend, and wow, did they love 'em! I had a bunch of leftovers - crushed eggshells, a piece of stale bread, a couple of slightly soft tomatoes (chopped). I mixed everything together with a handful of scratch and had some very happy chickens!

The next day I tried giving them the tops cut off of strawberries - another very popular item. So much better than just throwing this stuff out, and easier than composting. Although, I guess it is composting in a roundabout way...

Oh yeah, Bill and Dash have started their compost bucket on my kitchen counter. We've only been chicken farmers for three days so I have grand hopes that it makes it to the laundry/mud room shortly. Thank goodness it is mostly corn flakes.

I will say though, if they continue to deposit litter on the sacred pile through the winter I'm going to have the best fertilizer on the block. The garden club is going to be pea-green with envy.

My girls love tomatoes above all other treats. Tomatoes, blackberries and blueberries -- the berries grow wild in the bush behind us.
But as far as table scraps, tomatoes are the favorite by far!
