Woods question - again :)

Still plugging away....today was super frustrating as I was working alone and really needed an extra set of hands for every job I could come up with, so I did mostly piddly stuff. I did manage to get my 'Pullet Shut' door installed so at least that was a win.

As you can see the run is coming together, though I need to figure out what I am going to do to secure it at the top edge, under my metal roofing. Sigh...nothing like designing on the fly.

Last weekend DH chipped up a bunch of branches that we had stockpiled so I have the beginning of my deep litter base in the run. It's a bit 'branchy' but I think it will be an okay start.

As for the coop. I have my metal roof on the front section laid out so I can finally finish up my monitor wall once that is fastened down. Hope to finish that this weekend. Then I'm going to insulate just the back, North, wall and the back section side walls. I know it won't technically work to insulate the coop but I'm hoping it will save my future birdies from any biting cold coming from that side in the winter - honestly it will also make it easier to paint since it will be solid pieces of ply rather than a bunch of studs.

As frustrating as today was, it was a nice, though windy day (the smoke from a Northern fire has blown in now - yuck!) to be out in the garden and the tulips and apple trees are putting on a fabulous show :)

Field Design ;) It's almost inevitable. Hang in there!

What kind of chipper produced that?
It is kinda big, and maybe sharp.

out in the garden
That espalier is GORgeous!! Always had a deep affinity for those, never 'did' one tho.

I was thinking I might just run wire on the underside of the beams. Would I still need to use hardware cloth or could I use something lighter? Prolly not right? That stuff is expensive and hard to install. It does seem to me like that may be easier than trying to just cut small strips for the edges of the beams.

It was a 5" rental unit. It's the small green branches that it didn't do the best job of. They sort of came out looking not much different than they went in. For now I've spread it out. I'll let it settle a bit and then see what it looks like. We did the same under our lilacs a few years ago and once it settles it lays mostly flat. I may have to pick out some of it.

Thank you! I do love it so need to celebrate it while it looks amazing it is about 17 years old at this point and was a good idea for the plain back of a garage wall.

It's beautiful! An apple?
It's all about the 'tree bones' for me...off season interest.
Here's my Ode to Espalier, a hacked-n-slashed Concord Grape, 20 years old.
There was another one on other side of gate, but it died.

Oh, I love that! The apple is also a bit of a hack, I don't really know what I'm doing. The shape of your grape is lovely. If I could grow them here I would.

Weird didn't see these at first...ah edited to fix ;).

You could use 14ga 1x2" cage mesh, screws and washer to bottom of rafters. Depends on what you need to keep out. Look at My Coop page, I put up 1/2" HC on bottom of ceiling 'rafters' single handedly. It was not easy, but doable.

Ah, makes sense the smaller stuff didn't get cut well. It might be ok after a time and adding some other stuff in there.

Yes that is what I am hoping for with the wood chips. I did see your coop page a while ago and have thought about you fighting with that wire in your soffits a few times. The idea of having to lay that stuff out upside down makes me want to cry.

We don't have racoons, rats or possums but do have fox, coyote, birds of prey, skunks, badgers and weasels. Not sure what may actually climb to get to a chicken.

weasels climb and can go through any hole bigger than 1/2 "

Yeah that's what I figured and if that is the case then the 1x2 cage mesh that I have for around the bottom wont be tight enough....I have another 50' roll of HC on order (couldn't find it easily in larger rolls) so I may have enough to do the whole underside. I definitely have enough to do around the edges it just seems like such a nightmare.
