World Egg Day Hatchalong!(October 12, 2012 is World Egg Day!)

How's everyone's eggs doin? We're getting close, soon we can't see much of anything, so .... look now and let us know! LOL (thread has become too quiet!!!)
Mine are going pretty well I think! Still got 8 in lockdown (first group) and at least 16 still going from the second bunch. Gah... hatchdate for the first ones is Friday!!! *bounces*

I know! I have so much to do before then!

LOL Next week is going to be a busy chicky week, with some day olds being delivered as well as some eggs! Goodness, when it rains it pours!

I still have the remaining 4, someone told me that after day 10, shipped eggs usually have as good of a chance of hatching as any other eggs. She said that some won't develop and you'll find that others will die around days 3 and 7 for appearently no reason. Well that's exactly what happened. 13 eggs, 7 started developing while 6 never did, 1 died around day 3 and 2 died on day 7 when tempatures and everything were perfect. So hopefully these last 4 will continue developing and hatch. I'm going to take my chances once again and place another order for eggs on Sunday. She does a great job packaging and labeling, I just wish the postal service was easier on them. The air sacs tell the story.

But I know what you mean, when chicks are coming, there is always something to do.

LOL, yes, they will be too cute to be bothered, I'm sure. I just got a huge box from my amazon hardware cloth order that I'm going to use for the brooder, at least at first. The eldest birds will be kicked out by this weekend, and new batch of leghorns will go in that brooder. (box will have the bantams) So hope all goes smoothly!

hi all ,end of day 12 for me .looks like i have 10 /12 australorp eggs (shipped eggs) 2 clears.10/14 light sussex -1 blood ring, 3 clears . new incubator going well -hold temp /humidity spot on .cheers Pete

I want to candle the eggs agian but I don't know where the flashlight that I use is. My husband was working on a truck he bought and his flashlight wasn't working so I let him borrow mine. Now he doesn't know where it is. So when I find it I will candle and see how they are doing.

Oh man, that's really good aussie pete! Congratulations!\

Ugh, Men! LOL, cmfarm! Mine are really jumping!

It's much cooler outside today, so I have to go build now. Those poor leghorns in the brooder are really getting crowded (6 weeks old) and want to go outside. Today, after school, my daughter and I will let them out to play for a couple of hours, but then back into the brooder they go. Lets see how far along I can get with the coop! Even if the run isn't finished, they'd still have more room! Off to work I go!!!

OMG, I'm half a century old, with arthritis, and I'm going so dang slowly! I plan on 3 coops. Working on the first, which has odd connections that could allow predators through, and up against a corner, making reaching spots a bit hard. But basically, I've got 4 of those prefab concrete foundation thingies with 2' posts on each for the foundation, then I'm building a regular box coop on top that is 4' X 6'. It will have one short side that swings open to the garden, where I can shovel material in or out, the vegie garden is behind a retaining wall, so the floor is just above that height with the doors able to swing out. On the other end is another set of doors (and a roof overhang in case it rains) where the roost will run across. This will allow me to check the birds at night when they should all be quietly sitting there. Plus the roost will have different material (sand) and it will give me access for cleaning there. In the front, facing what will be the run, is a lot of ventilation and the door out for the birds plus the nesting boxes taking up the other side of the wall from the roosts. So if you're looking at the front, to the left are nesting boxes poking out in the standard way (3) and then a door with ramp off center to the right, then a blank wall where the roost is. Above that is a very large vent across the whole structure. It's the high point of the roof, and the slopes down to the back. I plan on using DLM (deep litter method)

The next coop will be very similar and for my seramas. It will be 4X8 at first, with the difference in that it will be split into two coops, as I want to try my hand at breeding them, and each end will open to the roost, with the back side opening up to the rest for cleaning, the front would have the nesting boxes and doors to the run.

Finally, the third one will be next to the old swing set. It'll be very different because it will be for my Sultans. I'll clean out the swings n stuff from the swing set and use the structure for a run, and attach the 2-foor coop to the area somehow. I don't have it worked out yet. It's my last structure.

My brother dumped a bunch of plywood in our front yard after work, so now I have a lot of material, it's just a matter of getting this old body to do the work! Ugh!
