World Egg Day Hatchalong!(October 12, 2012 is World Egg Day!)

Yeah, I really want to say that the little guy is a buff brahma by looking at the foot feathering and the color of the fluff. But the color of the wings look more like gold laced or partridge cochin and not so much like brahma. And cochins have 4 toes as well. So it's a tie, hahaha.

Ahhh well see there...I looked at a book and I could only see 3 toes so I thought I had it narrowed down. Both of those breeds are beautiful to me so it's a win, win.

Cochins & Brahmas both have 4 toes. The feathers will tell. Give them another week or so & if it gets a columbian pattern around the neck it's a brahma. If it gets more lacing it's a gold laced cochin.

The chick looks like he/she has a beard though...I was thinking Belgian Quail d'Anver until you mentioned the feathered feet. Maybe some kind of d'Uccle unless the fluffy beard goes away when it grows up.

YES, thank you for saying that! It does have a muff on each side of it's cheeks and like a beard under it's beak. I looked at the Belgian d'Anver and d'Uccle too. Noticed the lack of feathering on the d'Anver and kicked that one out of the mix.

What is it with chicken feet? I LOVE them! I like to massage my chikie's feetsies, they're so SWEET!

Something tells me I'm completely bizarre and weird, well I always knew I was, but does anyone else out there find chicken feet totally adorable?

Funny you should say that as I was looking at my silkies feet today and rubbing them. I noticed that some have larger feet than others...could they be BOYS???

If the little guy has muffs and a beard, then it's not a brahma or a cochin. I thought I saw the muffs too, but then I shook it off thinking it must have been the way the picture was taken, guess not. Do you know if the chick's are pure? Or could they be mixes? I like the idea of the Belgian Quail d'Anver if he didn't have those foot feathers, or the d'Uccle, hmm.. none of them seem just right which makes me think he's a mix of some kind. If I had to put one guess down, I think I'd say some sort of d'uccle, I just don't know. It's interesting, I think I'll have to participate in one of those mystery swaps one of these days.

No swap involved, these eggs were abandoned at the show, go figure! You know anything is possible. I was thinking if these are show birds they would be kept with their own kind unless they are being breed in a project pen. It is the cutest little chick and the coloring is going to be fabulous no matter what it is. When I go to the show in November here in GA I'm sticking around until everyone leaves and I am going to pick up any stray eggs once again because it's kind of fun

Got an idea (looking around for the lightbulb icon and nowhere to be found)...each of us go to a show and we send each other some eggs.

Bad news...
I work 12 hour days, yesterday when I finally arrived home from work I noticed that none of the lights in my house were working. I immediately ran to my incubator and the temp had dropped to 78 and the humidity was at only 30 percent. Something tripped the main breaker switch in my house and caused the power to go off. I noticed the power company had been around in the area the day before so I wonder if they are doing any testing.

SO, I immediately took the incubator to my warm bathroom, turned on my heater to get the eggs warm. I am on no sleep after working tirelessly at moistening the chicken membranes and hoping for signs of life. Sadly...out of all 15 of my fertile eggs going into lockdown only four have survived the outage, two are going pretty strong while two others may not make it. The heat is restored in my incubator but the damage is done. The good news is I just bought a secondary power source of ebay just this minute and you can bet I will be using it for the incubator for times like this. Lesson learned/

Oh, that's what you did, cindersga? COOL! LOL I've yet to go to a show, at the moment, they're just too far away and my kids need lots of help during school

Jrosemoore, I'm so sorry! It's amazing that you were able to save 4 of them though!

I just went to check on the incubator myself, and it's been a cold night, the temp is down, but I heard peeps! I put a blanket on the bator. It may be they'll hatch today. I put them in on the 21st... Was that a day too early?

Mine are due to go into lockdown in a couple of hours and they are fidgeting about already. No pips or noise but one egg just moved considerably as I watched. Fingers crossed this time. Last time I got 4/6 and they were all roos.

Are you sure only 4 survived? On the last few days of incubation, the embryos are producing enough heat to survive some pretty cold tempatures. I once had a 17 day old embryo survive 3 days on the kitchen table at room tempature, I still can't believe it and for the record, it was a complete accident as far as how it got there. And I also had chicks hatching during a 9 hour power outage and they survived. I wish you the best of luck with your hatch!

It's really sad when those things happen, especially so late in incubation... but unless something else killed them, don't give up hope because of the cooler tempatures.

3 out of 12 already hatched. 2 more have started to crack their shells. All early. Yeah. I have today and tomorrow off so I get to watch the rest myself
