Interesting. Seems as though the vet wants long term treatment for Histomaniasis (Blackhead caused by cecal worms) at a smaller dosage. Are you giving the Panacur (Fenbendazole) during the metronidazole treatment or after?

At 5 pounds she's getting slightly more than 30mg/kg twice a day (check my math, lol), which should be fine. Interesting that she's prescribed it for 14 days.

Jen looks the same this morning. Need advice: we still have her with the flock. How do we treat or prevent the others from getting sick? Vet won't medicate animals not in their office so it has to be over the counter or bring in three more hens to the vet. $$$$$

Also, the link said histomoniasis has no treatment? Im getting to the point where the more I read the more scared and confused I get.

In this link, you can purchase "Fishzole" as metronidazole 250mg in the 30 or 60 count bottles:

In this link, you can purchase safeguard liquid goat wormer (fenbendazole/panacur) to kill the cecal worm:

There is no *approved* treatment for food animals as metronidazole is on the FDA list of drugs banned in food animals. If she were my hen I would have her in the house where it's warm, but if that causes more stress, maybe outside during the day would be better, but definetly in at night. I'd also weigh her daily on a kitchen scale and if she didn't start gaining weight in 2-3 days I would tube feed.

As for the other birds, worm them all with Safeguard, which is the same as Panacur, both are 10% fendendazole and you can get it without a prescription at Tractor Supply and other feed stores for way less than Panacur. You'll find both the liquid or the paste in the cattle, goat and horse sections.

While you're out shopping for wormer, get some poultry dust or 5% Sevin Powder and dust your birds and their coop, you might have mites and lice.

Call your vet and tell her you can get Safeguard (fenbendazole 100mg/ml) OTC and she'll tell you it's exactly the same as Panacur suspension. One 125ml bottle at Tractor Supply is about $20. You could also use paste, but per dose it's much more expensive.

Goat bottle

Cattle liter

Horse paste

This is from The AAAP Avian Disease Manual:

"TREATMENT
There is currently no approved medication for treatment of histomoniasis in food animals. Small
groups of birds not being raised for consumption can be effectively treated individually with metronidazole at a dose of 30 mg/kg orally SID for 5 days. Antihelmentic treatment may help suppress the population of cecal worms."
