young chicken becoming aggressive with me

Don't be scared of a hen, heck don't be scared of a chicken period. Get in there and do what you got to do.You might not ever tame that hen some are just ornery I've got one, you just got to be the boss and believe it.She still won't snuggle with you but she won't challenge you either.

My husband holds the Roos upside down by their feet that personally bothers me but it seems to work on their aggression, of course he doesn't have to do it often because most of ours are tame.

Have had this happen several times, mostly with hand fed chicks often as they come of age and get spunky. It's pretty easily curbed with calm and deliberate determination.

I peck them back, on the head or anywhere I can reach, with the tips of thumb and first 2 fingers, as hard and fast as many times as I can before they get away. Well, not hard enough to hurt them, just startle them and let them you mean business. That's what another chicken would do, so they understand that kind of communication.

If that doesn't work after a couple applications, I hold them down to the ground with my hand on their back until they submit....again firmly enough to get the job done but not hurt them....add a few finger pecks and/or tug on the feathers on the back of their neck.

18 wks you said? It's funny that my new 13 hens are the same age and 3 started pecking me. They used to be very tamed when they were chicks then became scared of me @8 wks so I let them be. Recently they all become friendly again since they are beginning POL, and 3 started pecking me if I don't pay attention to them. I had experienced the same thing with RIR and Sussex last year when they are getting reaching laying eggs age. I normally pick them up or pet them and they will calm down and go about their businesses. At this stage they are normally hormonal, I've witness couple of hens fight then get along few weeks later after their hormones settles.

One of my RIRs is the same way (my profile pic, actually). I have a friend who says giving them a quick bop on the head (sort of like how chickens peck each other in the pecking order) works great, if you want to try.
