Im a total newbie! I ordered my first chicks from The Chick Hatchery i believe they are in Michigan. Ordered 15 received 19 one died during shipping and another the first night. Shipped on Wednesday arrived Friday morning all the way to deep S. Tx. They are now a week old. The rest are growing fast and look very healthy to me but then again they are my first chicks ever. When i joined here i tried to look them up to see if anybody had reviews on the company but didnt find anything....ohh yea and I got free shipping.

My local farm store uses Cackle Hatchery in MO, so that is what I now use. Their minimum is 15 chicks. I order chicks, not eggs. My first shipment of chicks is doing fantastic. I have one runt and no losses. Their selection of chickens is good, but the selection of ducks leaves a lot to be desired.

UPDATE: My second batch of chicks ordered through the mail arrived on Friday. I ordered 18. 3 sadly died the first night.

I saw three that concerned me when I did my first check on them. I re-dipped their beaks in the water. On my second check, only one was concerning. The other two were up and moving around. I gave the really lethargic one a little sugar water and it seemed to perk up. All three passed in the night. (I should've done more despite them moving around.)

I still think Cackle is a good quality hatchery. All the other chicks seem to be doing fantastically, even the very tiny ones.

Make sure you join your state thread here on the forums. Michigan has a vibrant and active thread, sometimes the best place to find chicks or eggs is local.
Fall time is a good time to start asking, since people are looking too thin their numbers before winter.
