Thanks! Professionally trained but not actively professional. When I was in art school, it was all darkroom photography though. Digital cameras were just starting to creep into the market. Now I mostly take pictures as a hobby but have done some small jobs now and again when someone asks.
One more of my buff brahma, Poppy. Then I'll leave you guys alone, promise! I don't think she's laying yet. I've lost count of how old she is though, 23-24 weeks I think. She's such a big girl, much bigger than my other standard birds of the same age.
It's been a while since I've shared my buff brahma. I hatched four and kept one, the prettiest. She's also the one with the black feet (which, as I've said before, are better than yellow!!!!). It's not a flaw, it's what makes her so beautiful. Her name is Poppy and she's 17 weeks old...
Here's the one buff brahma I'm keeping out of the four that I hatched. Her legs and feet are black but that suits a buff brahma, I think, and she's very pretty. Her name is Poppy; she's 13 weeks old now.
My buff brahma roo, the discerning features were that he was bigger than the others and his comb and waddles turned red much earlier...oh, and he started crowing at about 10 weeks, this funny little crow. That's it though. His feathering STILL looks roughly the same as the girls except maybe...
Their legs are green, almost gray or black in one or two - not yellow as compared to any other picture of a brahma in this thread.
Look again at this pic.
My four "buff brahmas" are outside finally, in a grow-out pen, 6 weeks old. They're enjoying the room they have to run, jump and fly, despite the cold weather. It snowed this morning! I sectioned off a portion of the hens' run for them and made them a pop door. They share it with the...
Yeah, learned that one too when I got EE last year. It turned out I didn't need it because they were all pullets but it's good to know. But with these brahma's non-standard combs, I'm up a creek. I don't know what they are in more ways than one, lol.
Mine are keeping me guessing. One is obviously a roo. Two are likely pullets and the fourth... I can't tell! They're almost six weeks old. What is that "magic age" anyway?
I'm thinking about kicking mine outside tomorrow. The lows don't look like they'll get below freezing this week but still want a heat lamp for them. It's just that I don't have an extra and the second hatch need it. Due to flooding, I'm not sure I can get into town to buy one tomorrow (river...
The other thread needs to be titled "Show Quality Brahma Thread" or something so that people are not having these experiences with those guys. It's unacceptable to be treated like that.
I want to see more pictures from all of you with established flocks and new babies too. There's nothing...
ETA: Sorry, I didn't see your response Sjisty!
Thanks for the explanation of vulture hocks and squirrel tail and thanks for the pictures. I see now the vulture hocks - that was the hard one to visualize for me. I get the squirrel tail. Interesting.
What are 'vulture hocks' and 'squirrel tail'? I've heard those words thrown around but don't know what they mean. I know vultures pretty well, being one of my favorite birds but I don't see any vulture in your rooster, lol.
And I've never seen brahmas offered at TSC. Seriously?
