Glad to see everyone continuing to chat on this thread. Sorry I'm not posting much these days. Life is a circus lately, but going well. We are still targeting to be in our new house by Thanksgiving and working like crazy to make it happen. But I did want to share that I had my vet, Scott...
Building is moving along fast now and we are scheduled to be in our new home by Thanksgiving. Yay!
The little one is only just getting his juvenile feathers so still has a ways before he can attempt flying. I'll try to remember to take a new picture of him this afternoon.
Sorry to hear the news, Serv. It's always a bummer to lose birds to predators. By the way, our mini duckling is thriving but still a mini compared to his hatchmates. I'm thinking it will only get to call duck size.
Hey guys. Been busy with house construction and work and care taking all the animals, but I try to keep up with reading. P, glad to hear about Babe. Hope he turns out to be a she. Stay warm with the storm. We too are in for our first taste of bad weather this weekend, and I am not looking...
Not sure her age. She was picked up by Richard during a massive round-up at a local park/dumping ground this past spring and was already laying eggs, so she is at least 1.5 years old.
Thanks! By the way, the brown/white African is a female even though she is striking a male pose in the picture.
Finally got new pics today of my production Toulouse. Not sure if this helps, P.
Indi (adult female):

Now that we have been through the ringer getting building permit and house plans finalized, I'm very excited to see all the activity on our property, knowing we are only a few short weeks away from having our new home built.
Sorry to be a Debbie downer about Babe being a gander. I doubt it...
Sorry I'm not posting more. Things are crazy busy with house construction. We are in full swing now and hope to be in our new home before Thanksgiving. You are thinking of Beignet and I can take pics of her this weekend along with my other production Toulouse (up to 3 girls/2 boys now), but I...
It is purely by accident.
Thanks. We are very pleased with the female, even if the boy we got her for doesn't want her. The baby African has gotten pretty big. Shame if it is, in fact, a boy. Can't have any more ganders in that group. There's already 7 boys which is a lot of...
Thanks, Serv. The baby African cross turned out to be a boy. Luckily, my friend had two similar aged girls and a solo adult female, so we swapped the juvenile boy for the adult girl. It worked out well for both of us. Unfortunately, the last solo African baby hatched by my white goose has...
Thanks. We think she is super cute and are taking extra precautions to keep her safe. Yes, our ducks are done for the year, thank goodness. We are over-run with 18 ducklings running around and need to find homes for most of them.
Crazy how small she is, eh? But she eats and drinks well, and is otherwise as normal as any other duckling. Her hatchmates are very nice to her and Mom is great, too. I think she is a Cayuga/ancona cross.
Here's our micro duckling with her hatchmates. It is growing, as it could not reach the dog bowl a few days ago, but is obviously still very teeny compared to the others.
Thanks for the link, P. It was interesting reading. I hope the duckling is like Serv's gosling and will shoot up like a weed any day now. So far, she appears fine but perhaps I'll mention it to Scott the next time I talk to him. I won't have time to get a pic today, but I should be able to...
Question for those who have raised a lot of ducklings..... has anyone had a duckling that did not grow? I have a 2.5 week old duckling that is the size of a 4 day old. It appears healthy and eats/drinks well, but is teeny, while the other 5 that hatched with this little one are growing like weeds.
That is very interesting. I have not personally seen that behavior between ganders and male juveniles, but ganders can be very loving. Perhaps Babe could be female after all.
