A nice personal record. The final paragraph references photos but the only photo is the cover image. ???

Without full instructions following a batch of eggs from first setting to final hatch, including how to measure and fine-tune the temperature and humidity at the appropriate times, this is of little use.

Nice to have the materials list and such good build photos.

Any photos of it in use with the chicks to show the final setup?

Very useful information. The modular panels alone are worth the read.

I like big roasters for my big family so I will have to try this after I've gotten my feet wet with raising and processing more conventional-sized meaties.

A nice overview of the basics.

I like the fact that you showed the comb difference on the same breed -- a lot of information sources don't use male and female of the same breed. It would be helpful to do the same with other breeds with other comb types.

You might mention auto-sexing breeds.

Also you might address confusing things like Columbian patterning making hens' saddles and hackles look pointed when they're not and link to some of the informative threads/articles on sexing difficult breeds.

This could be very useful if expanded with more photos and data such as measured temperatures inside and out. It would also be helpful to have information about how you change things summer and winter to prevent overheating in hot weather.

As is, it's more of a "quick tip" than an article.

I'll change the rating if changes are made to make the article "meatier". :)

Gorgeous. Plenty of space, plenty of ventilation, and beautifully integrated into the garden space and yard. Top-notch coop.

I credit the advice you've summed up here for a large part of my success in brooding three batches of chicks over the last year and a half without having any issues other than some pasty butt that was probably caused by shipping stress. I had chicks voluntarily sleeping away from the heat on 60F nights as early as 2 weeks (in a 4x8 brooder where "away from the heat" meant no influence from the lamp at all).

This is an interesting introduction to emus. It could use more information, or maybe a companion article, on the details of their care, housing, feeding, etc.

Great build photos! And plans too!

I like the thoughtful way you used your experience with your parents' coop and the information here at BYC to make a well-planned build that will give your chickens and airy and spacious residence.

This tastes good, but needs some guidance about the size of the ramekin, the size of the eggs, and the timing for degree of doneness.

2 medium-large eggs, which completely filled a 3" ramekin, baked for 20 minutes resulted in eggs where the yolks were entirely hard. I prefer my eggs medium -- whites cooked firm and yolks thickened but not hardening and would like to know how to achieve it. :)

Love it!

The details of the solar setup are particularly useful. I'll show them to my DH, who would like to get into solar power.

If you add plans I'll bump my rating to 5 stars. :)

Nice, basic, open-air coop for a large flock in a hot climate.
