Great photo journey on a really nice build ... and a fun read, as well. Knowing full well how nasty Boston-area winters can be, my only concern is with the flat run roof. Someone may have to go out and "shovel the roof" when they clear the snow off the driveway. Even with that, though, this is a really super set-up

And as a ps - You are very wise to beware of Chicken Math ... the threat is real!

I just noticed your comment today! We did end up installing clear plexi over the run, but the GC framed it on a slight incline and ran some J-channel as a “gutter.” We only had to shovel it off a time or two. Mostly it melted and ran off, and the girls were outside everyday with dry feet ?

Very well planned and built, taking into account all the important factors, such as climate, seasonal storms and even the seasonality of the shade trees. And it looks really nice, to boot! The purchase list, including what was already on-hand, is a real plus, as is the recommendation to plan walls to fit the less expensive 3' hardware cloth.
Nice Job!

Excellent article - Good description of "Permaculture," a term I've never seen applied to chickens, before. I LOVE the idea of incorporating a greenhouse into the south wall. My one question for @veganurbanfarm concerns the inverted "V" of the center roof. Do you have an issue with rain runoff or snow-melt draining into the run or is there a mechanism to direct it away from the structure? In my area, we'd either need to change the angle (which might mess up the greenhouse's effectiveness) or put in a gutter and downspout. Hmmm ... maybe a water collection barrel for more sustainability? This article has got me rethinking my own system ... and I just happen to have a few oversized windows laying around behind the old garage!

Nice looking coop! Links to build videos are a real plus. I am curious about how the mesh floor worked out for you. A follow up would be very welcome.

Nice article. Well built coop. The hinges that channel and drain water are a very nice touch - some details and pictures of how it was done would be extremely helpful. Thanks for sharing - you did a very nice job!

Great Article on the value of a hen's retirement years! My own older ladies are the kingpins (queen-pins?) around which the flock dynamics rotate. It's not the rooster bringing cohesion to my flock ... it's the senior hens!

What a great idea! It's not only a good place for ducks, but a few simple additions would also make it work for chickens. All it needs are a few interior roosts & a nest box.
Nicely done!

Wow! What an amazing "read!" I expected a quick article on a cute little coop set-up. What I read was a wonderful documentary! Villa Gallina is not only a great coop set-up, but the text reads like a novella - complete with drama, disaster, loss, hope and, of course, love.
Thank you for this detailed account of your chicken adventures. I hope they ll continue for many years to come!

This was so nice to read through! Six years of follow-up on a single flock is nearly a record, in my book. It was neat to see the way the flock morphed and grew. The roosters are unique and beautiful ... mixes are often the best!
Very Nicely Done ... Thank You!

This is a great record of a really nice build. Some interior details would be nice, but the overall documentation and pictures do a good job of telling the story ... complete with a "rescue" at the end!

Yes, I agree,I need more of the inside.
Unfortunately it’s not all that exciting, after having to move the chickens earlier than anticipated I kind of slacked off on my wholegreat interior plan.

Fire scares most of us ... and we do all we can to protect ourselves from its' dangers. We do what we can to protect our birds, too, but we don't know what actually works unless put to the test ... and nobody wants that! This well-written article documents the coop and run features that saved a neighbor's flock from a live-roasting. The pictures are frightening, but the results are wonderful. There are clear notes on what worked, both in preventing deaths and healing injuries, but there are also some thoughtful comments on how to improve on existing structures. All in all, a really great article ... Nicely Done ... Thank You!

Nice set-up! And thank you for taking on a threatened breed. Chanteclers are gorgeous! I have Nankin Bantams, another endangered breed. Its nice to help save a bit of history while maintaining the strong genetics of the heritage breeds. Kudos to you!
