Excellent observations, conclusions, and pictures. Ants and birds - I have seen birds dust/sunbathe in ant hills with wings outspread. Perhaps a combination of formic acid from the ants as well as parasite removal help to limit external parasites.

Like the watering set up, but the thought of raising 15 ducklings in the house makes me shudder. Ducklings look as if they arrived in great condition. Most ducks go through a 'terrified' period in their teen aged spell.

No mess, no fuss, let the hen do the work, and there is just something so very neat about watching a hen with her chicks.
