My husband has been having a series of facial surgeries...the first few were tooth extractions & bone grafts. Yesterday, it was a jaw-breaking which included a reciprocating saw and an air chisel. Part of the surgery was through his NOSE!
They did NOT knock him out, first...they said they needed his cooperation during the surgery. They gave him a bunch of shots in the mouth but he was awake for the whole thing with just an IV with Valium and a shot in the butt of Demerol.
This stemmed from a childhood line-drive to the face when he was pitching a little league game around age 10. He shattered his face, broke his jaw, nose & knocked out 6 teeth. They pieced him back together, shoved his teeth back in his face and wired his jaw shut.
About a year ago (age 29), the bone started to get infected & deteriorate. The teeth were dying.
So they (a dentist, oral surgeon & orthodontist) started before Christmas with a series of extractions, antibiotics, bone grafts, etc.
About a month ago he got bottom braces put on and then 2 weeks later, top braces.
Thursday, he had this reverse vice looking thing put in the top of his mouth (across the roof). This is to widen & stabilize the jaw after the break.
So yesterday, was the jaw-breaking procedure. He said it was the worst pain of his life and he was fine until the air chisel. I drove him to Wenatchee for the surgery and back last night...so I've been busy taking care of him...helping him ice, trying to get liquids into him, changing his gauze and giving him medicine...he just had some KFC mashed potatoes & gravy--the first food since Thursday night!
His nose is still bloody & raw, too.
So I won't be on here much for the next few days, probably....or at least a little less than normal!
