Michigan Winter was oh well a Michigan Winter! Cold lots of weather changes....Lost 1 bird too weather and one to predators. Egg production was way down. Birds seem to like spring coming. But whatever predator caused disruption about a week ago is still coming around. Can't get to the birds but...

What kills a chicken and takes it up a tree?

Not sure...Like I said I easily tracked feathers for about 50 yards, then 5-6 feathers at base of large oak tree but no carcass and no more feathers. Cant see if it is up on limb as first limb is 40 to 50 feet up. The other limbs are more like at 60 foot starting point. Think large straight oak. .

What kills a chicken and takes it up a tree?

I have not posted in quite awhile, but I am stumped....I have a automatic coop door closer that has worked well for a year or more. It failed to close the other night and I failed to check things out after dark. Something took advantage of the opportunity pulled one chicken from roost dragged it...

Do I Need to bury the fence 18"?

I used hardware cloth and ran it out 12 inches from sides of run. Dug down about 4 inches deep , pushed the wire down and shoveled dirt back on top. Then smoothed out and reseeded with grss. I can now mow right up to run and it seems to have worked for last couple of years keeping any digging...

How/where do you store your feed?

We are in the woods and have tried the rubbermade and poly type trashcans with lids. Critters eat thru the can to get inside. So now we have the metal trash cans with matching lids and no problems.

How many meaties do i get to make it wroth the trouble

I have done anywhere from 25 to 60 before. 25 is the amount IMO that you need to make it worthwhile and alot of hatcheries that is the minium order. Years that I did 50 or 60 meat birds, I sold 20 to 30 of them to neighbors. Good luck!

Is it bad to pick up chicken poop with your bear hands?

When i clean out my chicken coops, i use scoops and small shovels etc. But there is no way I don't get poop on me or my clothes. I just use caution and take clothes of in basement and get them to the washer. I then wash up good with hot water and soap. As previous posters have said, don't put...

What size trashcans, will hold a 50 lb bag of feed

A 15 or 18 gallon size is perfect. That way you can have 4-5 inches of feed in bottom of can and dump a 50 lb. bag in and still have room to shove a scoop in before pushing the lid down! I have 5 in my garage.... this size works well.
