I had two fav chicks with 9 toes total and one with 4 on each foot in my first hatch. All three came from the same hen (out of five eggs) so I doubt I will set her eggs again. The female went to a friend whose flock of girls' sole purpose is to decorate her yard and the two males will be...
Nutrena makes a supplement (pellets) called Feather Fixer. I used it last Fall when some of my birds molted late and cold weather was coming on. They ate it like candy and the extra protein helped.
I followed Sally Sunshines advice on assisted hatch and it worked out okay. Poor chickie ended up with spraddled legs and couldn't walk so it's got a bandaid sling on to help it out. Seems to have helped immensely. The whole time I've worked on this chick I've been thinking, if it's a cockerel...
I hear ya about the money thing. Chickens are addictive! My best hope is to sell a few to defray feed costs, haha! Seriously, our flock are a bunch of spoiled pets, and my husband is the biggest culprit. We could sit and watch them for hours. I Envy your incubator - mine is a Farm Innovators...
Day 21 and 7 of 9 English Orp eggs from California have hatched, one more pipped and the last one is rolling. Looks like 100% hatch on that batch! The Ameraucana eggs from New Jersey are coming along. Two of six are hatched and two more pipped. Nothing from thr other two yet but there's time...
Okay, so one has pipped and is in the middle of zip. Good so far. And another pipped ON THE WRONG END! I popped a tiny bit more of the shell and verrrry slightly opened the outer membrane a bit more. I hear the occasional peep and can see the beak so it seems to be doing ok so far.
I don't know about that... First time I butchered and stewed a rooster my husband said, "Two things...this is the most delicious chicken I've ever tasted, and you're no longer allowed to name the roosters!" This was after weeks of him saying he'd divorce me if I ever tried to feed him our 'pets'...
All the shipped eggs I started with are developing nicely. Just water candled the ones with bad air cells prior to lockdown and they wobbled like bobbleheads! They're doing great! I traced the air cells with a pencil to make sure they pip in the right spot and will keep an eye on them. I'm...
I live in a forested area so I have lots of leaves. I coarsely shred half of them (and leave the rest whole) and throw them in the run, ending up with a 4-6" layer at the end of the raking season. The hens love to dig through it which keeps it from compacting - it also helps to keep the soil...
Wow! While I have enjoyed reading this thread in past years for it's humor (which was the original intent, I think) lately it has become a complete buzz-kill. All the semantics and fighting over the past few issues has completely ruined it. Unsubscribing.
Hi! My name is Mischelle and I have been bitten by the hatching bug. Up to now I really had no desire to incubate eggs, but I lost my young Blue Salmon Faverolles rooster to a hawk this winter. He was so beautiful and such a dear so I saved eggs for a week and bought a Farm Innovators incubator...
Wow, I just give the dried poop a good solid yank. Sometimes a little fluff comes with it, sometimes not. I have done this for dozens of chicks over the years and never had a problem with picking. You all realize these are barnyard animals, right? Not delicate flowers...
