Barred Rock Cockerel FREE TO GOOD HOME Howell MI

I would be happy to deliver him. I'd like to give this and other forums a chance to find someone closer. Alma is quite a drive from Howell. I will give it a few days. Thanks.

Barred Rock Cockerel FREE TO GOOD HOME Howell MI

We got this guy with our chicks last year. We were not looking to get a rooster when we purchased our Buff Orpingtons, New Hampshire Reds and Barred Rock pullets. He has grown into an absolute beauty.

My name is Dan and I live in Howell MI with my wife and two sons. We also have two dogs, a barn cat and seven laying hens. The hens joined my family during spring of 09. At the time I had no experience with raising chickens, especially baby chicks. I read everything I could get my hands on...

Opa, I'm in Howell also. Maybe your son would be a potential candidate? I don't want to just turn my flock over to just any neighbor that doesn't have "experience". I'm currently working on making my setup a little more user friendly so that I could have someone take over when I'm gone...

I do have a couple neighbors that I could possibly turn to for help but I have not established any kind of relationship with them. It seems like a tall order to ask them to take care of my flock when I've never met them. I was thinking of hiring one of my son's friends to do it but there's...

I have a question that I've been struggling with. I have seven laying hens that I really enjoy. I would like to get more but I'm wondering what everyone does with their flock when they go on vacation. Do you depend on family members to care for the birds or are there services available to...

    mounting height of auto waterer?

Tell me more about these automatic waterers. I was thinking of building my own. I've been brainstorming some ideas but I didn't know something exists that I could simply purchase. Do they connect into a water source or do they have resevoirs?

    need quick answer about space!

My opinion is to give them as much as you can. I like to give them more than one area for a run so that you can "rotate" them. When the grass gets tore up (and it will get tore up quick) you can rotate them to the other run while the grass recovers.

    Insulation?

I have a 10x10 coop with plywood walls. There is enough ventilation without being drafty. That's the biggest problem. Drafts. You don't want your chickens to have to put up with that while roosting. A good heat lamp and they'll be fine. Insulation is ok but always make sure there's good...

Thanks for that welcome. I was so happy to discover BYC. I'm new to this hobby but am becoming quickly addicted. I have seven laying hens and hope to get more. My to-do list seems to be all about the chickens. My wife is starting to think I'm obsessed. I will check out the info on...

    Huge Frickin' Egg

That is quite an egg. I get them like that once in awhile. I seem to get a lot of long skinny eggs from my Red Stars and Amberlinks. They're so "tall" that the egg carton won't shut. By the way, why does the shell look so wrinkley on the real large ones?

12 hens and 1 rooster lost in 2 days

We have quite a coyote problem here is SE Michigan. We hear them at night all the time. They sound like a bunch of squealing hyenas. A few weeks ago we saw FIVE of them in the late afternoon back behind my barn. My son walked out toward the barn and they started moving back towards the...
