The Ameraucana is an American breed of chicken developed in the USA in the 1970s. It was derived from chickens brought from South America (Chile) that carried the blue egg gene and was bred to maintain the blue egg colour gene of that breed. There is also an Ameraucana bantam variety and both the LF and bantam variety were added to the APA Standard of Perfection (SOP) in 1984. Recognised varieties are: Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver, Wheaten, White.

The Ameraucana is one of the few chicken breeds to lay blue eggs, another being the Cream Legbar, which also have an Araucana influence. The Ameraucana breed shows many similarities to the Araucana breed, such as pea combs and of course the blue egg gene. The Araucana however has earmuffs and is rumpless, whereas the Ameraucana has a tail and is muffed and bearded. Their earlobes are small and round, wattles small or absent, earlobes, comb and wattles are all red. Their shanks are slate-blue, (tending to black in the Black variety). In Australia and UK both Ameraucana and Araucana breeds are viewed as varieties of the Araucana - tailed and rumpless.

Less rare than Araucanas, Ameraucana are still considered quite rare. They are often confused with Easter Eggers (EE's are often advertised and sold as Ameraucanas), which can lay blue AND green eggs.

The perfect mid chickens
Pros: Docile
Good for both eggs and meat
Love the cheek fluffs
Cons: Not large eggs
Not a lot of eggs (Still good for eggs though)
I love americaunas, and they are definitely a good breed to get for eggs and meat. Very sweet when trained.
Lots of colors and once more, we love the cheek fluffs.
Great review, love it! Good job.
Love my Ameraucanas
Pros: Beautiful, friendly, adorable, gorgeous eggs, funny, curious, nice size.
Cons: Can be towards the top of the pecking order

Often confused with Easter Eggers.

Feedstores sell EEs as Ameraucanas.
Ameraucanas have always been my favorite breed. I have raised several blue wheatens, and currently have white and lavender. Have had both male and female, never had one I didn’t adore.
Purchase Price
$10, $19.95.

A True Favorite!
Pros: So adorable, super personable when raised from hatch, beautiful to look at and wonderful blue eggs to mystify your non-chicken friends with. A very intelligent chicken compared to many others.
Cons: None
I found a beautiful Easter Egger and dove into the history of the Ameraucana after. It amazed me that they were so sought after that shops used phony names! What is the wonder of this breed? I saved my pennies and shipped a few purebreds across the country and I am smitten. Beautiful funny intelligent birds who have become family overnight!

I've only felt love from a silkie. She would lay an egg and stand next to it and cackle til I picked it up. Poor thing died this year...

I have EE and love them, am thinking I have to order some ameraucana's this year even if I have to drive to Burch Run MI to pick them up
Love your pics, the lavender is sooo pretty

HI, your comment was attached to my Ameraucana review, but I didn't post any pictures. I hope you enjoy the birds you add to your flock.

Beautiful,Colorful they actually come up to be petted. They seem to know my moods and they are always under my feet helping me to do my daily work.

Where can I buy some adult Americaucanas? I had a pair long ago. I traded another rooster for the A . rooster. I had a few other roosters in the flock. I caged him for about 3 days so he would get used to the area. When I let him loose he fought with every other rooster and won. He was the master after that! He was all colors of the rainbow and was not aggressive to humans, as some of the other roosters were.
A neighbors dogs killed 11 of my chickens. He is replacing them. I want adult birds. I had Australorps and would like some again but will take the Americaunas if I can find some.

You should check outh the ameraucana website http://www.ameraucana.org/ there is a list of breeders, you could call the ones in your area and see what they have, i got mine from a small breeder in my area.

I too have Ameraucanas and they are wonderful birds. They are very social and since we have handled them since they were just days old they love to be carried around and petted. We had friends over and the husband had never touched a chicken before and was so suprised that they were so friendly. We have only hens though as I live inside the town boundary and they only allow hens. I would love to have a roo...but am happy with my girls.

I have 10 Ameraucana hens and most are very friendly and easy going, but a couple are skittish, one more so. I called her Zelda from early on as she was always a bit cuckoo. On the whole though, they have NEVER been mean to each other at all, more goofy if anything. I find myself always talking in a reassuring manner with the Zelda types.

We got 4 buff cross (w/something) and 2 Ameraucana pullets, that were about 2 - 3 weeks old and they have always been really skittish - I've even tried just sitting down in the run with some treats and nothin' doin'. We had to let go of our last flock when we moved, so starting over is a bit difficult. We had buffs and red and black sex links and they would come right up on the porch with us. Now, the A - Roo is quite different. He hangs with us and thinks he's a goat - running with that flock. It's pretty funny!

Thanks. I have two adults and 1 chick, but in the process of ordering eggs and I will eventually get to breeding them. So excited!

Ameraucanas don't lay green eggs. They lay blue. If your bird is laying a green egg,it's an Easter Egger, not an Ameraucana.
