Hi,
I just moved back to Bowie, MD this summer (this is where I grew up) and am dismayed to find out that it is not legal in Prince George's county to raise chickens in your backyard. I am bummed! I spent the last 3 years in Iowa and have grown quite fond of fresh eggs and my girls loved...
Ranchhand - that is a good idea on how to separate the pecked on ones. I was able to get a great second brooder container today so I am going to split them up tomorrow, but putting in an oven rack will keep the two injured ones separate so they can heal.
I actually put them back in today...
I'm keeping an eye on the temp - currently 80. But it sounds like my brooder is just too small for all those birds. I have them in a container that is 42 3/4" x 22". I guess that once we get past this cold weekend, they will go out in the coop where they will have plenty of room to spread...
Well, I have had to pull two of my 3 week old chicks out of the brooder because they have been picked on their wings until they were bleeding. I have a red heat lamp for them, so maybe my brooder isn't big enough. Can anyone tell me how much floor space you need for 24 chicks? I may just have...

That is very creative and I will keep that in mind. I wasn't sure I would be able to handle the blood aspect of the killing. When I dispatched my roo, I held him upside down by his feet, then lay his neck down on the ground, laid a rake pole across the neck, stepped on the pole on...
Hmmm...my run is an old horse stall. There is hay down on the dirt. So maybe I just wait til it looks messy then rake it out and throw down some more? That is what I will try. I can just add the poopy hay to my compost pile.
Sounds adorable! I just snapped a pic of two of my girls in the nest boxes today. Yes, you must carry the camera with you - you never know when there will be a chicken kodak moment.
Awesome pics - we had skies like that this morning over Des Moines. I was heading out with my kids to go play with some kids from church. I was snapping pictures with my cell phone and the clouds had that same coloring. Then when I got out to the main road north to Des Moines I could see a...

They get sun through the open wall which faces south. In fact, several of them were taking dirt baths there this morning and catching some rays.
Those are called chicken saddles. They came with the flock because the Rooster, Randy, is apparently appropriately named. They keep the hens from getting torn up when he jumps them - which is a regular occupation of his.
As I was saying....
My chicken run is a converted 10x20 stall attached to the side of our barn. It has 2 sides that are covered with metal siding and the third side we put up hardware cloth. Does anyone know - will predators try to dig under metal walls or only where the fencing is and they...
Sorry! Somehow I was working on the post and it got posted before I was ready! lol...gimme a minute for the pics. They just got uploaded on photobucket.
Being new to chickens, I may not be the best to answer this. I was just going to let them fall where they may and do the deep litter method. But Ma was telling me they had a dropping table and how it made it really easy to keep the coop clean. So I did a search and started reading different...
