I am going through birds to decide what to send to a poultry show. One bird is really nice in every way but some of its wing feathers are snapped about three fourths of the way up. Is it even worth entering a bird with that defect?
I have three questions.
1. Is split wing a DQ or is it a fault with points taken off?
2. Is slipped wing a DQ or is it a Fault?
3. Is a twisted feather a DQ or a Fault?
I raise silkies but I am thinking the answer would be the same for all breeds of chicken.
Has anyone left their eggs vertical when they went into lockdown?. I have a brinsea octagon econ and I want to try to leave the eggs up and down instead of laying them on their sides on day 18. In the past I have had chicks die because they end up facedown when zipping around and they can't...
My silkie rooster had a bad case of mites in his crest. I bathed and sprayed with Adams flea and tic. The mites are gone but he has been very listless. He is sitting all of the time and is losing weight. No crowing. He doesn't leave the coop. this has been going on for over 2 weeks. I just moved...
anyone have any good ideas on dealing with pasty butt in chicks. Silkies seem to get it worse than other breeds. I lost a chick last night and I don't know if it was because the vent was plugged or whether I was too vigorous in trying to get him unplugged.
I am guessing that this is a pullet but I am not sure. I did trim it up around the eyes so it could see.
I am not sure what you would call this variety. It came from a splash hen and a blue rooster. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
This youngster was hatched out in March making it around 4 months old. I'm pretty sure its a pullet, but I am just double checking with what you all think. Thanks
Hi, Anyone have a list for the swaps in Minnesota for this spring and summer? I usually rely on the Brown County Poultry Club page , but I can't seem to locate it. They either have a new site or they no longer have a web page. I called Isanti Coop to see if they were having one this spring and...
My husband brought home an infared thermometer that he bought at NAPA (used for cars?). You just aim it at an egg and it gives you the temp. inside of the egg. Very nifty. I find that the temps inside the eggs do vary as to were they are sitting in the incubator. Anyone else using one of these?
I am wondering whether an aquarium thermometer would be better in a hatcher that has high humidity than the walmart thermomter/hygrometer I am using as far as having an accurate temp would go. I am thinking because it would be more water proof it could be more accurate. Any one using one?
I have been using the walmart digital humidity reader in my LG hatcher. I have 4 of them and they all show something different and they don't seem to last long. Is there something better, like an analog humidity reader. How do you do a wet bulb reading without opening the lid of the hatcher and...
Here is the video ad my young son came up with to place with my craigslist ad. I'd like some feedback on it. Should I go for the young urban male customer or should I change the music to something more country? I think that it is very funny and has increased responses to the ad. Here it is:
My husband is demanding plans for grow out pens for silkies to put in our garage. He wants them off the ground because he thinks that it will be too cold on ground level for them. We want to use as few heat lamps as possible. I want them as big as possible but still be able to reach to clean...
I recently combined two cages into one large one. I have two male cocketiels who are basically the odd couple. They don't really like each other but they tolorate each other. I put a pair of parakeets in with them. They got along for a few days, but this morning I woke up to blood and feathers...
I would like to know the order you would rank these qualities when making the first cull on silkie chicks. Which is more important? large vault, toe spacing or color of skin on feet? I had a chick hatch today with a huge vault but its toe spacing was not the greatest nor was the color of the...
I am thinking that this is a cockerel. He was born in July, so around 2 and a half months old.Maybe slightly older. Is this a cockerel or a pullet?
Thank you!
