We have a similar story for Sumatra's! My daughter was given one by a friend and after two seasons have had no luck at all getting a chick to hatch! Everyone on this thread makes it sound so easy but I guess we just aren't meant to have them. Good luck with you order and enjoy!
Having only one Sumatra hen I can't give much advice on this one. But I do think they followed our hen around when "they" came up with that figure. She only lays in spring. Not one a week but one every other day on average. Maybe that comes to 50 or so per year. She is older. In a chickens first...
Thank you to everyone with advice and moral support! Last year I did have them in a own when I first got the rooster just until I felt confident he would not run away ;)
Then they were free range as he was the only rooster. This year they have been free range the whole time. Both of them don't...
They are the only two Sumatras we have. I have seen them breed, but not too much. But I did see them breed a couple times during the time she was laying when I was collecting her eggs. She did have a few fertile eggs last year when I incubated I think it was 8 eggs. But none of them made it. I...
The sumatra hen whose eggs I attempted to incubate are all duds, is now sitting on her little nest of two eggs. I intended to keep collecting her eggs, oh well. But I am so proud of her she comes off the nest every morning when I am feeding horses and critters and comes straight to me for treats...
This is just like our story! My mother had 20 or so RIR when I was a kid and I made a pet out of one that outlived all the others as a free range bird. Her name was Mergatroid. Fond memories. Then my now 11 year old got into the poulty layer hen project three years ago. The second year a 4H...
So unhappy I just candled our 10 sumatra eggs that have been in bator for 5 days and no veins. In contrast all 7 eggs from the rocks have veins. I don't even care for them just threw them in for giggles.
Look what I just found. First time I've successfully had a hen hatch her own eggs Now what do I do? Do I let her be and she will care for it (them if more hatch) or do I intervene? The nest is actually an old sand bucket and is about 10" off the ground. The hen is a BT barred rock. There are...
Us too, we started with the hen given to us by another 4H family trying to clear out some coop room and she caught my eye right away, so unique looking! Then I fell in love with her personality and thanks to infinityhrt we have a gorgeous rooster for her and he is a wonderful rooster in the...
Yes he was the only Sumatra. It was a tiny fun show. Only one AOS bird. My daughter was tickled to get best of breed. She doesn't know any better yet. ;)
Does anyone else have any stories about their chucks?
My littlest daughter at three years old had a knee boo boo and a hen ran right up and pecked it. Of coarse there was screaming and crying and she says "mommy the chicken bit my boo boo!" I thought quick of something to say so she wouldn't...
