In general black copper lays darker than blue coppers or pure blues or pure blacks. It does depend on your stock and their genetics though. I have some pure blues that lay very dark...darker than some other peeps black coppers (see my Marans photo album) so I think it does just depends on...
I have had some hens that laid progressively darker up to a point. My BCM Cheepa does that and so do a few of her really dark laying daughters and grand daughters etc. Then after a while of laying they go back to a little lighter of a color (but not much lighter lol).
For most of our Marans...
Amen to that. Dinsmore Feed Store has some @ 14.50 per bag for layer crumble (just fyi) but still.....its a lot! I think I was only paying around 11 per bag a few years ago grrr.
I am working on lavender marans they will not be isabel though. I have a solid black Marans paired with some lavender orp pullets and also I have a lavender orp rooster paired with an already split for lavender (visually black) Marans female.
Here is the black marans male with one of his lav...
Does anyone have any photos of what a Blue Buff Tailed Marans rooster should look like? Obviously like the BTB with the bllk replaced with blue but I haven't ever seen a blue BTB rooster.
I crossed one of my solid blue Marans hen to my BTB male and threw in a few eggs in with some other...
Oh, so now Florida has all the crappy birds? I've got plenty from the West Coast, Midwest and everywhere else advertised as pure Marans that certainly weren't....
Don, I have found that the pure/solid blacks seem to have less white on their faces than my BCM chicks. I wouldn't think its 100% on all black Marans chicks because different lines probably end up with subtle variations just like all the other varieties of Marans do lol.
Some of my solid...
Even though it was rainy today I got a few pics of the two black male chicks. They are a little messed up from playing in the rain and sandy mud. At this age, they still hard to differentiate from a BCM chick but when they are born they have way less to no white on their faces than the bcm...
Nice basket of babies. I have only had a roo bcm chick that hatched out early on in my program that had a copper spot on his head. He ended up with way too much coppering on his body.
I haven't had any girls have the copper spot so I don't know how they feather out.
I got a good look at the 3 black babies that I had hatched out in the bator. They are a month old tomorrow. It looks like for sure, I have two solid black little roos (with thick legs and red combs) already and 1 black female out of that group (she is very dainty).
They are sooo friendly. The...
The red egg gene seems highly individual in dark laying breeds. I have a black marans hen that lays a very dark red egg. The bayhorse bonnie line of black copper hens seem to lay a medium to dark brown reddish egg so maybe if you can find someone that has that line and sells eggs.
I haven't...
I am in NE FL. I have been here 5 yrs now. I would have rather moved much further south. Dh and I both got job offers up here first and put a deposit on a house that we couldn't get back without a hassle. Then of course got offers in Sarasota right after we already put $ down on a house and...
Yep cocci is supposed to be species specific. There are many different types of cocci that affect chickens. They will be immune to the specific type of cocci they are exposed to, however, move them to someone else's place etc. and there might be a different type of cocci there that they are...
