I just can't understand people that don't enjoy hearing a rooster crow. When I go out to do chores in the morning I hear those calls coming from 5 different directions and it just makes me happy.
I have a dozen laying age hens, 2 of them with 4 & 5 chicks they hatched. Then I have the group I ordered before my 2 hens went broody, I call them the tweens.
Haven't tried it but I have read that many have had good success just running some fishing line over the area. You can cover a fairly large space for very little. It restricts the hawk's attack line and discourages them.
I may be heartless, but children will learn too. I give warnings and am watchful of my grands but have never seen a shock do a great deal of damage. I had one grandson (19) hit it 3 times within 5 minutes. Grandparents and Dad kept telling him to be careful but he was a little slow that day.

How NW are you? There is a lady who advertises regularly in the Okaloosa/Walton CL out of Crestview. I got my Nov 15 hatch of 9 from her and have been happy with them so far.
Got the kids out of the house this weekend. They got moved out to the new Big House Saturday. Yesterday I let them out in the run for a little while and they really seemed to enjoy it. One grabbed a dead leaf and had a good rugby match going for a while. At night they get shut in a 4x8x2 box...
