I did something similar to this for my brooder cage.
I do suggest lowering the pipe so that it only allowes about an 1/8th of an inch for food so spread out. I have done this and have almost zero waste.

I got them because I wanted to get more self sufficient with the food I am feeding my family. We just bought a home with 4 acres and I hope to alot more. When I was a kid, my father dabbled in quail, chickens, rabbis, etc... so I learned a little growing up. Quail seemed to be a good learning...
Our quail are 8 weeks old now and laying eggs. My 8 yr old son and I resided to cull out the extra roos and have Sunday dinner for the family.

Thanks, that is why I am doing this thread like I am. This forum is is full of great information from quail experts on how they are doing things, but short on information on how they got there. So I am trying to chronicle my journey as someone new to the hobbie.
The girls turned 3 weeks over the weekend and as a treat I put a dust pan in with them. They loved it, it was fun to watch them as they discovered what it was for. After the first one dug in the rest came running. 18 quail trying to get into 5"x8" area, lol.
1) Why did you get quail? Is it for the eggs, meat, pets or other?
I got them to teach my young kids how to care/ raise our own food. Our Cots are now 3 weeks old. They will be manly for meat but will eat eggs as well.
2) What do you feed quail? Make your own feed or can I buy feed...
