    Murderous Light Sussex hen

I've just had a disastrous experience with my first incubation. I only hatched 4 out of 20 however one was a gorgeous blue female japanese bantam. I was completely in love. I gave them to my broody silkie hen to raise and she bonded instantly. They are only 5 days old and are all tiny bantams. I...

Dumb question...google didn't give me an answer :)

Hi guys I'm wondering...if a female duck has a drake then are the eggs she lays fertile all year round or only in breeding season? I mean, I know when hens, if there's a rooster there's an assumption the eggs are all fertile so is it the same for ducks?

    Eeeeek!!! There's hope, there's hope, there's hope!!

So I've had an incubation disaster. Out of 20 eggs (3 large breed, 17 bantams) only 4 have hatched. They were given to their adoptive mama along with 4 remaining 'slow' eggs from my deathtrap incubator. Mama and chicks hopped off the remaining eggs while I was out today and the 4 remaining eggs...

Is it true what they say?

That if you dangle a little chick by the 'scruff' of its neck and they either let their legs dangle down straight or pull them up will tell you if it's a girl or a boy?

Help. Unabsorbed yolk sack....real time emergency now.

I'm in the middle of a chicken hatching crisis due to incubator problems. Anywho one of the eggs I put under my broody hen has hatched a lovely silky. BUT the yolk sack is not absorbed completely. It's about the size of a pea. I did a quick search and someone said if they're in a dry location it...

    Do you find incubating stressful?

I'm wondering if I'm just not cut out for incubating chicks even though I love it. Until hatch time. Especially when some don't make it. I feel stressed and anxious and it's not fun anymore, but the moment I see cute fluffy chicks that grow and thrive I can't wait to do it again. Is it 'just...

What did I do wrong? This isn't fun anymore!

Hi everyone. I haven't been on this site in a while because I hatched my own chick. She was a miracle IVF with many losses so I have a long history of meddling with eggs :) Anywho I recently bought an 'affordable' incubator from ebay as my little Silkie went clucky and I've had stressful times...

Is Ebony a good quality silkie? Or just cute?

This is Ebony. She is very small....with a stupid sized hair style. I'm wondering if she would be considered good quality or poor quality. She doesn't have the feathers down her middle 'longest' toe which I've heard is desirable. Any opinions? She's quite a dark black colour.

Look at little Ebony now! Advice on eye covering hairstyle please.

In August I had my own chicken hatching miracle, hatching four little chicks in my bed. They all survived and 3 of them have gone to new homes. However little Ebony, the smallest and last to hatch captured my heart and has stayed to live with Lulu the silkie and Henny Penny my brown hen...

Three little chicks needing identification/gender...veeery pretty

Hi guys Here are three little 7.5 week old chicks from a mixed batch of bantams being raised by my Silkie, Lulu. These ones came from eggs marked 'pekin frizzle'. While they are definitely bantams I'm unsure of what kind. In your opinion are they pekins? I'm thinking the black lacy looking...

What is my little peep! PIC + at least tell me he's cute :)

My lovely Lulu (with my help...see my last topic for awesome story) hatched 9 little guys for me. 2 x light sussex, 1 x possibly speckled sussex (it's brown so I can't see how it's a light sussex like the guy said), 2 x are obviously silkie, and supposedly 4 x pekin bantam frizzles. Would you...

Love is Blind :( Canary advice needed *cute pic*

I bought my canary Henry. Then I couldn't bear the thought that all his beautiful singing would never randomly entice a lady bird....so went back to the shop and bought Junebug. June bug is pretty and Henry is smitten. A few months later I noticed one of Junebug's eyes seemed to have a white...

Take a look at my Mallard please duck experts....

Here's Donald (With the missing Daisy) the day that I brought him home last week. Do you think he's pure Mallard? He's sort of a different shape around the head to her. He was stretching his neck up long most of the day but has stopped doing that now. I rang the man I bought him off and he...

Oh No! Daisy is MISSING. Support/crystal ball needed.

I have 2 hens and as of last week 2 ducks . (I got Daisy, a snowy mallard a boyfriend, Donald). They seemed to be getting on fine although she kept leaving him behind when she went thru her secret hole in the fence to the next door neighbour's bushy backyard. I had spoken with my neighbours...
