I have 4 Olive Egger Roos (Marans x Ameraucana) who hatched out Jan 1, 2012. They have started to crow and have to go. I would rather they avoid the soup pot if possible.
I am located in SW Ontario (45 minutes from London and 45 minutes from Waterloo)
We are putting the finishing touches on our new chicken coop and the chicken door is approximately 30 inches off the ground. What is the appropriate pitch or slope for ease on entering/exiting?
Thanks in advance
I recently acquired 2 seabright pullets. The one laid an egg the very next day and then took 3 days off and then laid another. After another 3 day rest, she laid again. No problem there. The other pullet laid her first egg with me and it took a long time (several hours) and since she has laid it...
My oldest chicken (Easter) has funny looking feet. They appear dry and cracked but she isn't limping or anything. Any ideas what this is or if it warrants any action on my part?
Her winter bedding was pine shavings and she had just moved to the outside coop. We are having crazy hot weather in...
These chicks are approximately 5-7 weeks old and are the result of EE X Maran cross. I am confident that at least 2 are roos....hopefully that is all! I know that full body pictures would be best but these little chicks are frisky!
Pullet 1?
Pullet 2?
Pullet 3?
Roo 1?
Pullet 4 or...
We recently added 3 chickens to our flock...a black sex link, red sex link and a white mutt. On day 2 they all laid eggs. I got a darker brown, lighter brown and white egg so I thought it would be easy to guess who was laying. We haven't had another white egg since then (almost 10 days ago) and...
Ok...I knew it was going to happen sometime:(
Here is my problem...we live in town and I am not sure that roosters (or hens for that matter) are allowed and I am unsure how to figure that out without alerting someone to the fact we have chickens (10 in total). Perhaps this is something I should...
These are the latest 3 additions to our flock. They came straight off the farm. Any guess as to what kind of chicken they are? At least they are laying eggs!

#3 Fluffball
Elvis, our bantam blue cochin laid her first egg! No fake egg in the nesting box or anything. I thought it was coming because she had been talking up a storm. There was a light, small smear of blood on the outside, but I couldn't find anything wrong with her when I checked on her and delivered...
I am looking at getting a couple more chickens with the hopes that one may lay an egg. I found someone local with ISA Browns? What are they and are they good layers? And how do I tell an old chicken from a new layer?
TIA
I have two lovely ladies who I am spoiling rotten...lots of treats, a light for 14 hours, 3 roosting bars to chose from and a decked out nesting box and still no eggs. They are about 18-20 weeks old and I just want to know how much longer? So if any of you have a direct line to the egg fairy...
I currently have one really old EE that last laid an egg more than a month ago. She got sick and has since recovered (mostly) but is not laying. She is in a pen by herself. I also have a blue cochin and a Gold Comet both of whom I am still waiting to start laying. I was told they were 18 weeks...
I am new to chickens and am definitely learning as I go.
We have the traditional waterers and have the deep litter method in the bottom of the pen. The chicks and the hens keep spilling the water or knocking pine shavings into the waterer. Any solutions out there?
Thanks
I am really beginning to wish that Ontario Canada had access to the same hatcheries that the folks in the States do....I picked up all my ladies at 2 different "Feather and Fur" swaps. I was told my EE chicks were really Ameracuanas (and I asked specifically for that breed) and now it appears...
We brought 4 Ameraucauna chicks home from a "Feather and Fur" sale 4 weeks ago. We were told they were 4 weeks old and that it was luck of the draw with sexing them. So we crossed our fingers. The black one acted like a roo from the very beginning. But now, I think we got it wrong. He might be a...
I would be glad to be told that I am wrong but I think Smoke is a rooster. We were worried that Ink (the black one) was the rooster based on the behaviours she was displaying, but looking at tail feathers and comb development, I think Smoke now has one foot out the door. Too bad because I really...
I am looking at trying to hatch some eggs, assuming I can find some that will deliver to Ontario, Canada.
Can someone tell me what NPIP tested means and whether anyone ships to Ontario Canada?
Thanks
Hi
I am the mother of 3 +2 children and thought that I could take on some chicks in my spare time. I thought they would produce better "pet" lessons than some of the traditional pets (let's face it...none of the kids like walking our dog) and we had chickens when I was little so....
...We got...
