No I'm not talking about the line from the movie, Pet Cemetary. LOL
Seriously, I have many chickens and a few ducks and I want to know what I can SAFELY put on the ground to get the sour out of it from all their poop.
We're lucky to have very sandy soil here so it drains and dries well but...
I spent four days gathering the eggs I want to hatch in my bator.
I set it last night and put everyone in but today I noticed that the heat wasn't coming up. The heat tube is not working. I left them in the bator with the turner and am attempting to order a new one.
Should I scrap this set...
I wasn't able to gather for about 4 days due to weather and not feeling well. Needless to say I had a bumper crop of eggs when I gathered.
I did the float test assuming that I'd know the "goodies" from the "bombs". Turns out they all lay sideways in the water.
They lay in a coop that is covered...
When you open your bator does it smell?? I'm only on day 7 but have had to check the eggs earlier. The smell is rank. Not overpowering but .. ewwww.
I'm thinking it's cuz they're "duck" eggs and ducks are notorious for laying their eggs in any ole place. (hence how dirty they are) And that is...
I have a new LG with an egg turner that I'm using for the second time. This time on duck eggs. It's been less than a week the eggs have been in there and I've had one spike of 103.7 and just now it hit 104.
I know how SENSITIVE the setting is on this but DANG! I was having trouble getting the...
I finally gave up and pulled my eggs that didn't hatch. No sense in baking little bombs.
I cleaned the turner with Lysol wipes. I scrubbed the rack and the bottom with antibacterial hand soap and HOT water. I wiped the windows and fan off with Lysol wipes.
I was hesitant to use bleach as it...
I have a group of silkies that I put in all at once. I ordered them.
Four hatched on day 21. Today is day 22. Not a pip, a peep, or movement. I've candled and found full eggs but no movement.
There were two that were obviously not 'right'. I opened them. One had stopped development early...
Nothing. No movment. In a couple it looked like I could see the umbilical cord. It was red. I had four hatch out yesterday. But I purchased these eggs so could it be that they're not as old as the first ones?? *sigh* No pips either.
I just rewatered the bator and closed it up. I did choose...
.....until hatchlings take an interest in eating and drinking?? My babies were hatched yesterday morning and all they do is sleep and find a new place to sleep. :)
I have a pip!!! I'm a greenhorn at this. This is my first hatch ever.
Here's my question... It hasn't changed in 6 hours. I can hear him/ her peeping away in there. Everytime it sees my flashlight it peeps. I soooooo want to flick a piece of that shell off. LOL How long is too long to wait...
What was I thinking?! I have 29 chicks coming tomorrow to replace the 17 that died in the first order.
And wouldn't you know it... we have COLD temps. *sigh* Keeping my fingers crossed this order goes better than the last.
This is Java. She is one of our dogs. She has been tried and found guilty of chicken killing in the past. She is out on probation right now. For some reason she has claimed these chicks as HERS. The cats are NOT allowed anywhere near them. Although they are safer with the cats. Her egg sucking...
So, I got my eggs to incubate on Monday. However, on Sunday I stuck in a couple of my bantam hens' eggs. I was just curious if anything would happen.
Well, today I candeled the first of them. I saw veins!!!!!!
I know I know, all you pros are like, "Yup. That'll happen when you incubate a...
I did stuff like this.
This is a duck egg. It has a trimmed window cut in the back. :) I made all sorts of things from duck eggs and goose eggs. Jewelry boxes, nicknacks, nightlights.
My chicks from McMurray are here!!!! I'm going to get them in a few!!!! I'm thrilled!!!!
Just had to share. I now return you to your regular programming.
I was wondering with the warmer temps if those chickens would ever start laying. AND THEY DID!!!
My hen laid me a pretty light brown and the bantam hen laid her first ever egg. :) She and her mate travel the coop together all the time. If she sits down he dutifully stands guard. (it's so...
I was so proud of myself. Got a nice wire cage all set up with a heat lamp and some newspaper with new feeder and waterer for my coming baby chicks. It's hanging on the barn wall for easy access. The daily weather has been warm.
However.... the nightly temps drop around 30. I'm now worried...
I just have to say it or I'll bust!!!
My silkie eggies are due to ship in three days. Happy dancin'!
Do you think God rolls His eyes when we get worked up over stuff?? LOL
I woulda posted on the "Hatching" thread but I think they're a tad sick of me over there.
You may now return to...
I know, DANGEROUS.
But... I've been reading and studying up on how to hatch my babies when they get here.
I've taken notes on cleanliness and bacteria. Temps and humidity. Got my bator stabilizing. No drafts, no direct sun.
Then I get to thinking... Momma hen gets out of her nest...
