After several bad hatches with my LG's I splurged and bought the Havobator Genisis Modle # 1588. It has the a preset automated thermostat and fan. Also has more built water troughs for better humidity control and my hatch has gone great. The proof is in these pictures. These chicks are from...
My helpers are now inspecting the small coop we built for their MeMa! When I turned my back my two year old daughter climbed right up the chicken ramp and into the coop. My son with the wood in hand is figureing out how to trap her in.
We had a great time together working on this coop!
I knowwith chickens its ok to leave them until you think everything has hatched 24 to 36 hours. Is it the same for quail? Don't want kill the ones that have hatched but don't want to shrink wrap the others. Advice please!
The answers can be very long for alot of us so I shortened mine down to a few of photo's that I now just forward to people that ask. This answer seems to satisfy most of them quickly.
Saw the idea of using chickens to till and fertilize raised beds in the off season in a magazine and started construction. The tractor sits on top of a bed that is 3 ft by 8 ft made of 2 by 10's. I filled it with top soil and will let a trio from my flock do what chickens do best, stratch, eat...
I have a LG incubator with a styrofoam base. The built in trays for holding water appear to be allowing water to seep out underneath. I am having to fill tthey trays each morning and night and it has never done this before. Any ideas on what I could use to seal the styrofoam that will not harm...
I went outside last night to gather eggs and check in on my flock and noticed dog tracks as I approached my fenced in run area. I thought to myself it looks like a dog has been snooping around. When I shinned my flashlight across my run I could see feathers everywhere and dead hens laying all...
I was getting 12 to 15 eggs per day consistently and over the weekend they have stopped. I got no eggs on Sunday and only two on Monday. My flock consist of about 6 hens that are reaching 24 months and 18 hens that are anywhere from 6 to 9 months old. The weather here is 60's at night and 80's...
My Dad wanted a new coop and his health is not the greatest. He has the heart but his body just want cooperate. He loves animals and chickens are easy enough for him to take care of on his own. He just needed a hand with the coop. I built this for him as a Fathers Day Gift this past weekend and...
I have been lucky for over two years and never had a predator problem. I have read here on BYC about coon, fox, owl, hawk, dog, coyote, possum, cats, ect. devastating flocks and never worried much thinking that want happen to me and guess what...it did in a big way. I was feeding my baby girl a bottle...
I made this Duck house last weekend. The crate was about to be thrown out at the place my sister works. She thought of me and asked them to save it. I picked it up, thought about it for a while and decided it would make a great house for my two Pekings. Need to paint it and it will be complete...
Three new wood ducks have hatched and two more working hard in the bator drying off to join them. I read they can be tuff to incubate but so far I have 5 out of 6 hatched! They are so tiny. Very cute!
I don't want to offend anyone but I read alot about people here that love silkies and I don't think they are all that cute. I know they are great mothers and great chickens. I guess I am more of a traditional cleaned legged chicken person. Silkies just look a little wierd to me...no offense...
How do I go about getting information to hatch and raise wood ducks. Do I need a permit ? I know I can order them from a hatchery but I read here that a permit may be needed. Please help.
This nest box belonged to a dear sweet lady named Mrs. Murray who is now passed. She raised chickens down the road from me and I bought my first chicks from her when I was about 10 years old, I am now 42. I still know her grandson and recently we where talking about old times. He mentioned his...
The chicks shown here are 7 weeks old and are from a SL Wyandotte Hen crossed with a RIR Roo. I think the offspring from this cross can be sexed by color but I am not 100% sure. I have seen the Feathersite information but it is not specific to this cross.
It definaley appears that way to me...
I planned early this year for the hot summers and built a range shelter for my flock. It is a simple shelter with a roof and south wall to block the sun. I put 2 x 6,s around the bottom to hold shavings and sand for dust baths. Added an extra water source so that my flock has plenty of fresh...
My son who is less than two years old is already learning how to recycle chicken manure and wood savings into fertilizer. We spread it on our food plots at our hunting club and use it in the garden. I could not resist sharing his shovel skills with you guys. He is a future chicken man for sure.
My first broody hen had success and hatched 5 chicks this past weekend. All are doing well and this photo came out so nice I wanted to share it with everyone.
