The giant is much bigger, but has no spurs yet. Mario is three and has one spur. Apparently they had a huge fight yesterday and the giant got the worst of it by far.
He has lost his comb and most feathers near it. His back has lost some feathers. He looks pretty rough. We have moved him into...
here it is about 7 months later and we learn from the vet that the puppy has some congenital problem and is already mostly blind - will lose all sight within the next 6 months.
She is a wonderful pup. She has two big dogs who live with her, and dote on her. Does anyone have experience with...
the "elbow" is close to her body, but the tip of the wing is hanging down, almost touching the ground. She can still "flex" the feathers there, and otherwise appears fine.
Our jersey giant "hen" turned out to be a roo, and he and our resident rooster, Mario, have been chasing each other around...
I've gotten two with rough, rough shells in last week. Another hen is laying eggs with a "ripple" sort of pattern on the shell. The ladies appear to be fine, eating well. Ideas?
Any ideas? I'm worried about her three siblings and the other 5 hens, and Mario the roo now....
The only sign of any problem was yesterday someone sneezed a couple times.... Also one of the four young hens had watery poo yesterday tho I never thought that was an immediate death threat... I...
Can hear them peeping, and heard some pecking out of the shells! I even saw one fluffball very briefly before momma coralled it back under her! They are all in the regular coop. It's a 4X4X4 insulated box, and the ten birds keep it relatively cozy... I may consider moving the peeps and their...
this is mom hen, she's kind of homely but funny!
this is poppa with the four youngsters:
this is one I think is a roo? ..but I'm basing that on the muttonchops and beard look he is sporting...
I think this is a hen?
and these next two I just haven't a clue.... Of course I don't have much...
1 has feathered cheeks that are almost constantly fluffed out like whiskers. My roo has that too. Does that make it likely this is a boy? None of the other three have this fluffy-cheek thing going.
I have tried to see the difference between pointy feather tips and rounded on my hens and roo...
Seems that three of my four peeps were roosters, and not only will Mario not tolerate that much competition but there are only 6 hens.... they would be worried to death by that many roo
The roo are about 18 weeks old. Thanks!
What would cause his comb to get several thin black stripes? He seems happy enough - the discolored tips on his comb happened after a week of extreme temps (in the teens at night). the stripes go from the lower points in his comb downward and look much like spidery varicose veins?
I had pet sitters over the holidays, they must not have grabbed the eggs out each day... How bad is it for her to be sitting on eggs that will hatch in January (near the mountains in Virginia)?
Should I upset Blackie by stealing the eggs? Or just let her try to hatch them? If they hatch will...
It's staying dark outside later and later in the morning as winter approaches. I usually wait until after sunrise to open the coop door into the run, but it's making me late for work.
I worry about predators skulking about pre-dawn..
Does this in any way "sex" them? Could this mean three of one sex, ond one of the other?
Their moms are Red Sex Link, and their dad is a RIR/Buff Orp mix.... Three chicks were golden/rust colored and one was almost white. The white one is the one who is very slow to feather - tho "he" is every...
trying to sneak under the chicken wire at the edge of the run....
Got home from work early (thank goodness!) to let them out and only three babies strolled out with the flock... hmmmmm... loud disturbed cries from over in the corner helped me find him... Little Houdini apparently thought...
feathers? Or are they likely to be white chickens? Their moms are red sex link so maybe they "reverted" to leghorn coloring?
When will their "true" colors show?
Just wondering what the averages are... my chicks are being raised by their mommas. They have started putting out white wing feathers and their heads no longer resemble pompom balls... When can I expect full feathers? Their true colors? etc?
