Just introduced three new Rhode Island Whites to the flock. I do not have any experience with these. I have been led to believe they will lay brown eggs even though their lobes are white. Is this true or will they lay white eggs? They have about a month or so before they start to lay.
I only have a flock of eight and for the past three weeks only two have been laying. Today, however, things changed. We had three new layers this morning. The three that accomplished this feat were a leghorn, RIR, and a (beautiful green egg from a) silver Ameracauna.
It's 33 degrees in North...
What is this word (obviously means chicken of some kind)? Where did it come from? How do you pronouce it? Ch as in church or ch as a "k"? When/why is it used?
The light in my coop comes on at 3:00 am and turns off @ 9:00 am. It is still pitch black until about 8:00-8:30 am. The last few nights I have forgotten to close the coop door, so the birds have free range to the run.
Each morning I check on them before I leave for work @ 5:00 and have...
Can someone (or more) show me pictures of White Rocks. I am trying to identify a hen I have. I have been told in the past she was a White Australorp and also a Leghorn.
Sorry, I can not post a picture of her at this time. Maybe tomorrow.
I am truly amazed. I have read and been led to believe that golden phoenix will only lay maybe 1 or two eggs per week. Well, to my surprise, one of my golden phoenix has laid 10 eggs in the last 11 days.
To top it off she was only born on July 1 (not even 5 months old). No, I am not getting...
This is too funny. In the clip the Alaskan governor pardons the 2008 Thanksgiving turkey while others are being butchered behind her. The butcher in the background helps make the shot. Where else and by who else would you see a scene like this. Go Sarah.
helps if I attach the link.
Last week a first time layer laid an egg five days in a row. Last three days...nothing. Is this normal to have this long of a lapse? There does not seem to be any change in the hens physical condition an demeaner. She does not appear or give any indication of being sick. Should I be worried or...
This is a little bit of a revival of an old thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=86728
where I was wondering what this breed is. She was sold to me as an "Ameracauna". At the time all seemed to agree she was probably an EE. She started to lay a week ago with brown eggs...
Got our first egg ever yesterday! Not really sure which bird. It is brown, but I suspect it is from the EE anyway. The picture is comparing it to a large white "store" egg.
I know this question has been asked before (probably a few times) and I think I know the answer, but can not seem to find post about it.
I only have about one week of grower left to feed 20-22 week old pullets. I do have layer on hand. Would it be fine to switch over to layer at this age before...
This might be a silly question but would a CFL be fine for lighting in the coop or should it be an incandecent? A 13w CFL is cheaper to operate, but I do not want to cause harm to the birds or mess them up egg wise (I said it was a silly question)
Also, it is getting to be the time of year where...
So a couple of my birds have bloody (raw hamburger type, but no other symptoms that I can tell) droppings. I think Coccidiosis. I rushed out and bought a 16oz bottle of Corid based on what I have read here.
My questions are:
1) since the chicks (all about 5 months) and they are on a...
So if you don't have a rooster, how can you tell where the chickens are in the pecking order? Which one is on top? I only have six so I thought it would be easy to tell, but I am not so sure. I have been watching closely, and I think I have it narrowed down to two, but am not sure.
Not that it...
I have three nest boxes between six hens. Four of the hens are 17 weeks old and two are 10 weeks old. I started out with all of the nest boxes available for use and some of the older birds would sleep in them and make a mess in them. So I covered them up with cardboard. That was about three...
