Hi-
I'm rotating out my old flock and raising a new one. My current rooster and I have an understanding, we 'get' each other (esp. when I have the leaf rake ) and he's nice to the girls. My question is, should I keep him rather than ordering another roo with the new group? He'll have to be...
While out for a walk in the front yard with my 2 dogs, we came across a flock of turkeys and poults. One chased after them and somehow managed to get a young (three weeks or so) poult. I got it away from him, but it could not run or fly far, so I picked it up.
I'm concerned about internal...
So, I was curious in general and hatched out 8 of my red star eggs. Yes, chicks resulting from a combination of red star hens and a red star rooster.
Does anyone have experience with this combination? 6 or the chicks are basic, run-of-the-mill yellow chickens, one is a light buff orange, and...
I _can_ not_ believe it. My first hatch was a combination of whim and faith: wanted to see what our hatch rate would be (20 hens 1 rooster), borrowed an incubator, borrowed a turner, kept the temp steady and water when it needed it. Day 18, took out of the turner, added a dish of water, day...
So, two weeks after we found "Storm" in, well, a _storm_, I went in to the infirmary (where she's in quarantine) to put her to bed. What do I discover, but an EGG!
We have absolutely no idea how old she is, and are guessing that she's either a NH Red or a RI Red.
Way to go, Storm! Next...
Hi All-
My husband and I "rescued" this girl in a blizzard that hit our area last week. I'm curious as to how old she might be (I wonder occaisionally if she'll ever lay). What do you think? She's actually come a long way since we found her. Originally her beak, legs, and a circle around...
Hi All-
My rescued hen has started producing droppings with the tell-tale blood and little red mushy bits that I have seen in many pictures of cocci poo. I would like to get her on either Amprol or Sulmet immediately, but am not aware of a store which _definitely_ carries it. Can someone...
I just finished reading the post about the chicken someone found in the woods (near a pile of three other dead chickens). Very strangely enough, I got a call from a friend yesterday (because I'm the one person she knows who has chickens) saying that a chicken had randomly showed up at her son's...
Hi all-
I just read a post in another area where the poster suggested putting a pile of dirt in the run for a dust bath. This got me thinking. I have several bags of dry, dusty, soil-less potting mix. It's predominantly coconut coir. Would this material be safe for dust bathing?

So, I've had the rooster in for about a week due to frostbite. It's been SO cold here, and the girls had pecked at his comb/wattles pretty badly, that I just didn't want to risk him. Anyway, his battle scars have improved dramatically (most of the scabs have come off), and the frostbite is...
I posted this weekend about my poor rooster who was being set upon by a couple aggressive hens. Well, thanks to your suggestions, I was able to clean him up, put pine tar on his tender spots, and put him back with the flock. Two days now and he's not wearing any blood. In fact, he is more...
Well, followed the advice I got...brought him in, cleaned him up, swathed pine tar on his tender spots (and all over myself!), and put him back. As of today, he's not bloodied and rounding up the ENTIRE flock (used to only gather his 8 of the 20) at dusk! I'm so proud of him and so glad for...
What do you feed to a chicken who is thin (due to illness from which she is now recovered), but is not a big eater?
She doesn't want oatmeal. Will eat some yogurt, but grudgingly. Tried scrambled eggs, but ate only a few bites. My biggest success was damp layer mash by hand.
Has she got...
Hi-
I posted last Sunday about a hen who had removed herself from the flock, was uninterested in treats, and stayed on the roost with her head under her wing. She seemed dis-interested in the other chickens, and seemed to wander a bit aimlessly (when not on the roost).
I brought her inside...
I have to admit to being a complete idiot. I had NO idea that hay would cause an impaction. Now one (maybe two) of my girls is suffering from this...at least, I'm fairly certain that it's from hay as I just a week ago spread 5 flakes in the run to help keep their feet dry/warm (it was soggy...
Had to share this:
While on my way to fill my new 3 gal. heated plastic waterer, I really thought hard about a better way to do it. Currently, it's not really a graceful act to fill the thing. Either I use a hose to fill through the rubber-stoppered hole, or I take off the whole base. Either...
I have an intuitive guess about how to fix this, but I'd really like more educated/experienced input.
Since we've had such rainly weather lately, my chickens have taken to "dust" bathing in the coop. Unfortunately, this means that great quantities of shavings are tossed into the waterer, which...
While in the pen today, I notice a pullet with a slice from the corner of her mouth, to about half way down her the top half of her beak. She was perky, eating and drinking well, but the slice had bled and scabbed (probably a couple hours old).
After examination, I made the decision to clip...
Hi All-
I posted this in egglaying/behaviors, but I thought it might be more appropriate here.
So, now that I've been getting eggs for a few weeks now and tend to talk about eggs (and how good _I_ believe mine are) a lot, I find myself with some questions.
First, I have read that feeding...
