These were banded as pullets at the local Atwoods. You'll see that they were chipmunk striped when they were little, but their feathers are now coming in solid red. They have yellow legs and single combs.

Is this Silkie considered blue or black? It's not nearly as dark as my Australorps, and its feet feathers are decidedly more grayish than the body fluff. What color would you say this chick is?
Thanks for your help!
I just got some frizzle bantam cochins - 3 to 5 days old - and I'm wondering if they can be feather sexed like some other breeds.
Buff frizzle - I think pullet because of tail tufts and longer primary feather development. What do you think?
White frizzle #1 - I think pullet because of tail...
I'm back at the house after being gone much of the day and I'm feeding the cats and dog inside, puttering around, ignoring the dirty laundry, etc. I already went out and gathered the eggs, and it's dark outside by now so I know the girls (chickens) are probably inside the hen house getting...
I checked again on the BYC Rules - this was a good reminder for me, so I thought I'd share. (I only quoted a couple of the lists - click "Rules" in the Index bar at the top of the screen for a full refresher!)
Dont's
This is a list of things you should not do on our board. BYC Staff will lock...
Several thunderstorms moved through our area yesterday. Between the rain and hail, I caught this guy doing his Phoenix impersonation at the top of the dead oak on my back acres. I think he's just trying to dry out. Pardon the poor quality - the second, closer photo was taken through binoculars.
This coon has killed one pigeon and eaten a leg off another - through the wire of their pen. When the pigeon attack happened I thought it was a cat, but since the metal pan beneath the coop was bent and torn halfway off, exposing the mesh metal floor, nnbreeder - a very credible BYC member -...
Backgrounder: She is 27 weeks of age. I have no rooster - there's no sense letting her sit on infertile eggs.
Day 1 - Wednesday 9/2: Mabel the Buff Orpington is on the nest in the morning - no big deal. She is still there when I get home last night. Move her off the nest and take all eggs...
I cracked two eggs in the frying pan for breakfast this a.m. and this is the wonderful surprise I got! They weren't extraordinarily large eggs, so I was surprised when both of them were double yolkers. YUM!
2 eggs with sea salt
Here is the hen house we adapted from the buildeazy plan. It is 6' x 8' with a linoleum-covered floor. It has windows on the north, south and east sides. The window screens are covered with hardware cloth. There is about a 4" opening between the tops of the walls and the roof under the eaves...
She is a pullet from the Ideal Poultry hatchery, but I have no idea what breed she is. She is 9-10 weeks old, has clean bright yellow legs and a clean face with what I think will be a rose comb (looks different than the pea comb my EEs have). I don't recognize her color as Wyandotte, but then...
I don't know enough about Game birds to know what the draw is. Could you game owners please enlighten me? For instance, for my purposes I've chosen breeds which are known for laying lots of eggs, and when we had meat birds we chose breeds known to grow quickly to be butchered in a few weeks...
These are the packing peanuts I got from Ideal - I have 6 little roos - I figure they are all boys because all my pullets have feathered out so much more quickly. The all have single combs and are yellow or gold-colored. If no one on BYC wants them, I'll list on Craigslist or Freecycle....
She is 4 or 5 days old here - got her from the feed store, they got her from Ideal. I want her to be a brown leghorn. Look how feathered out her wings are! Whaddaya think?
UPDATED: Okay - now I think she might possibly be a Welsummer - what do you think? Here are photos at about 2 weeks...
Went to Atwoods "just to look" today and came home with these pretty girls...I have no clue on the breeds - they are both clean-faced and have white legs.
Mystery Chick 1 - 3 photos
Mystery Chick 2 - 2 photos
Thanks for your ideas!
Zip-a-dee-doo-da!! I got a call from the PO about 1:10 this afternoon that my peeps were here already! I wasn't expecting them until tomorrow, since the ship date Ideal gave me was 2/25...but I'm not going to complain.
They were all alive - and are now zipping around the brooder like little...
Must have chicks NOW! I am afraid I'll go over the edge...!
Ahhh...that's better. I have peeps in my brooder...finally.
So cute - but strangely quiet...what could be wrong?
What breed? (soft and squishy - covered with sweet dust - no legs)
I am getting a very small flock from a hatchery and am not planning to vaccinate (because the hatchery advises against it for some reason), but if I EVER want to add a new cluck or new chicks next year, I'm not sure how to go about it. Here are my basic questions about quarantining new birds...
I am not a member of many online forums and have not been a member of BYC for long, but I must say that in my opinion the BYC moderators do an EXCEPTIONAL job of keeping things civil and sane around here.
On a forum with nearly 25,000 members from varying backgrounds and countries and with a...
So I went to the feed store this evening to see what they had...my list of desired breeds in one hand and pics of baby peeps in the other. After researching on this site and others, I felt I had a good idea of what I would be looking at.
I peered confidently over the edge of the cheeping bin...
