Cooper's Hawk. This hawk had to go through 2 doors and a pop door. All chickens were outside under a bush and it was inside the coop going crazy ! His talons were about 2 inches long. After a "Jesus" talk we let him go and told him never to return !
I was given wild turkey eggs a week ago and we are trying to hatch. (nest destroyed by cutting hay) The eggs are full with a small amount of an air pocket. No idea how old, however, DH just called and said they were rocking and rolling. I told him to up the humidity and see what happens. Did...
I have had chickens over two years and have never experiences lice or mites, but it seems everyone else does. I check them out very carefully. Anyone out there who has not experience this either? Just wondering!
I was given 8 wild turkey eggs to hatch, but have no idea how old they are. The shells are completely full with a little bit of space. we have been turning them but now I wonder if they should be in lock down. Any help will be appreciated. I am only hatching them, not keeping.
Hi all, I was checking on my one lone chick this am and it was "peep, peep, peep" and I turned my back and I hear a "brawwwwwwwk". This happened twice. It is possible that he is trying to crow already????? It actually went from a baby chick of 3 week into what sounded like a possession from...
Three weeks ago I found my incubator's light had gone out on day 20 and I thought I had killed my chick. However, with MUCH support from BYC's one lone chick hatched. Now three weeks later she/he has no idea what a chick is and is doing great. She/he thinks they are part of the family...
I had a chick hatch on Monday and none of the others hatched. I need a brooder mate and will take anything. I am located around Elkin, Jonesville, Booneville area, but would be more than happy to travel. Just need to give this chick some company.
Thanks,
Everything was going great when I went to bed last night. This am heard DH screaming for me and the light bulb in the homemade bator went out sometime last night. The two beautiful eggs were cold as a rock and the temperature was 70. I am so hurt, but will forge ahead and set more eggs this...
Well, last night was lockdown for my two surviving eggs. I decided to take them out of the carton and put rubber shelf paper down, and layed the eggs on their side. Well, it wasn't but just a minute when they both started shaking and one of them rolled around. At that point I put them back...
I lockdown my two remaining eggs tonight when I get home from work. The are white eggs so I know something is inside cause I can see movement. Wish me luck. I do have a gut feeling that they may be a little late, but am so excited I can't stand myself. DH has also become very interested in...
My eggs are scheduled for lockdown on Wednesday, however I think they may be falling a little behind on development. When I candeled them last night you could see that a chick was inside, however, there is still quite a bit of space at the bottom of the egg. The air pocket looks great, but as...
Hi all,
I have a home made incubator and am trying to hatch 6 eggs. I need answers to a couple of questions:
1. Before you go on lockdown, do you place anything over the hardware cloth. I have this vision of chick legs falling through the hardward cloth or am I crazy?
2. Can anyone show me...
I know this question has been answered over and over, but all I need is a simple answer. I put in 6 eggs (really not expecting anything) on Saturday. Didn't know if they were fertile or not, but I was really just trying out my bator. Well I candled last night (just to learn) and one of my...
I never intended to hatch chicks, but after reading all your posts I'm game now. I built one last weekend, have it set up, calabrated the humidity (6.50 from Walmart) and it was right on the money. So now all I have to do is make sure I have fertile eggs. My DH fussed and fussed about more...
Recently I put an intercom system from the bedroom to the coop just so that I could hear if anything was wrong in the coop. Well over the holidays I was listening to the rooster crow and immediately after he finished one of the girls tried to mock him with her own type of crowing. It continued...
I have made myself an incubator and plan on trying to hatch some chicks. I understand about turning the eggs when they are flat on the hardware cloth, but when you put them in a carton how does that work? Do you turn upside down or just turn around. I'm confused.
I have a flock of 19 hens and they all seem skinny. The are healthy, eat well, happy and are in no distress, no mites, lice or worms. What can I do to fatten then up? My DH told me that they just take after their "mom". I am not really worried, but I can always feel the breast bone. Most...
I have a couple of girls who have had the bumblefoot scab on their foot for a year. After operating on one before, I decided to wait and see if they became worse. So far nothing has changed. They get along just fine, no swelling or redness. Am I doing the correct thing? I do know that...
My DH just called and stated that one of our girls was spitting up blood. I did notice yesterday that she went to bed early. She is 14 months old and has been fine. The only thing I can think of is that we have been getting soft shell eggs lately, but did not know who was the problem. Told...
This is a test run to see if I did this correctly. Our coop has a pop door for both babies and adults and at the present time they are separated from one another. I will post more if this works.
