One order from MurrayMcMurray yielded 5 roosters out of 25. Another smaller order of 8 from MPC (which arrived late with three dead) has yielded 2 roosters- my speckled sussex. Interestingly one matured a month before the other! They are huge.
I have already gotten rid of the Andalusian and...
He is a terror and I have him separate from the girls. Also crows non stop. So his new name is "dinner". Except he seems awfully scrawny. I have never eaten one of my chickens before soI may not be the best judge.
The boy is now about 11 weeks old.
These birds were delivered the week of June 1st... Now I will have to cull, one if not more... The EE is quiet, the andalusian is erlentlessly going after my year old hen, the speckled sussex is HUGE and the jury is out on the austrolop,
The analusian does not look very meaty, but is the worst...
I have only 5 hens left from last springs order and have 25 new chicks soon to leave teh brooder house. Rather than merging the flocks, I am thinking that I would like to dispatch my older ones...
Are they only good for stock at this point?
THoughts?
We are into our third day of record heat. So far, I have added frozen water bottles to their waterers (idea from this site which works great). They do seem to pant less after drinking the cold water.
THe hen house is in the shade and I am letting them free range in the shade under trees...
We got him from a neighbor when our friendly australop was killed. This guy is not too friendly with me, but is ok with the hens....
He is the only rooster in our flock, previously he lived with several others, and was the only one with tailfeathers, sorta.
Once I can get pictures up, I van get opinions.... But I would like to know what breeds others have gotten. this was part of their cash for cluckers promotion of 25 heavy breeds...
Both good and bad results... Got a 25 chick special all feisty and heathly (did eventually loose one of the order). Of course the order that I placed months ago with two other neighbors which was carefully thought out, came a day later than they should have. 2 chicks were DOA. Another two of...
My Buff Orpington is in her second week in her nesting box. In the past I read a lot of good threads on what to feed her and how to keep her in a dog crate, etc.
Can someone help me with this? From what I am reading it seems like I should seperate her to prevent other hens from nesting on/with...
We have a nice flock and are planning our spring order... We would like to add some Bantams for our 11 year old.
We are in NY so it gets cold. What would you suggest?
Should they be clean legged?

I have 16 hens about 4 months old. They go out during the day and return to the coop at night. They have a nice outdoor run. They also free range at times,
They are happy to perch in their roosts, but I have never seen one go into the nest?
What to do?
They are about 20" off the floor and we...
When he walks he lifts his legs up to his chest. He is not as active as my other chickens (they are all 20 weeks old) since he started to exhibit this. Now he will sit off on his own.
It does not seem to be a balance problem and there are no deformities or injuries that I can see.
Ideas?
This...
I am hoping that it is for more than one season, as we are all getting attached, I have 17 hens that are assorted heavies (Buffs, Wyandottes, Rocks, EE, etc)
I know that they start at about 20 weeks. When does production start to drop off ?
I have an assortment of heavy breeds- buffs, rocks, austrolorps and Wyandottes....
The info seems to be conflicting. I hate the idea of having to start over each year !
btw- I have 17 hens.
