when do you leave eggs for mom to sit on? someone said when momma starts to molt and become barebellied. i guess my question is when do hens molt, when do i eat the eggs and when do i let momma hatch the eggs?

my husband decided to feed the chickens egg shells. i know they can help with shell strength (so i've been told) but i wonder, if they did like them, don't think they do, will they start pecking and eating their OWN eggs / shells?
