I need to sell a dozen pullets from my collection of Red Stars, Barred Rocks, and Buff Orps. Nearly all are laying -- I'm getting over 40 eggs per day from 48 pullets. I would also consider selling my Bearded Buff Laced Polish cockerel.
I'd like to sell 12 of my Red Star pullets. They should start laying in mid to late October. If they're anything like my previous RSs, they'll eventually lay large to jumbo eggs nearly every day. These girls are quite friendly and enjoy spending time on me and my daughter (almost as much as the...
I have a Buff Orp chick that isn't doing well -- all the other chicks are all healthy and active. Her feathers have been puffed out, including around her head and neck, and her wings were drooping. This morning she seems to be ready to give up. Last night I offered her some feed (non-medicated...
Since all of my Delawares have tails, how did this one come out rumpless?
He's the second I've hatched like this -- the first was a cockerel hatched with from the same batch of eggs the rest of my Dellies came from. I didn't keep him because he was obviously not up to the standard.
Anyone...
This morning we discovered that a stray cockerel was trying to make time with the girls. At first I chased him around with a net while hoping he'd hop over the fence and go back to wherever he came from. No such luck -- nor was I able to catch him before I gave up and took my daughter to...
One of my 2 yr old RSLs has started laying eggs with paper thin shells. When I first see them in the nest box (from the wrong side of the poultry wire) they look great, but by the time I get in to collect them they've been broken and I can see there was virtually no substance to the shell...
To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up.
(got this from an email today)
This is one of my 2 day old Delaware/Barred Rock chicks. Do you suppose such a pronounced comb at such an early age may suggest it's a cockerel? The other D/BR chick has virtually no comb yet at all.
The details: Hovabator 1602 + auto-turner for incubating, temp steady at 100-101 for 18 days, humidity wasn't as constant as I would have liked, but was better than previous hatches -- usually between 50%-60%. Moved the 35 eggs (out of 40 that I set) into the hatcher, Hovabator 1588, for final...
Just curious. I'm expecting 2 doz eggs and would like to be able to warn my mail carrier to be on the lookout for them in case it gets cold again -- if only I had a clue when they would be shipped.....
The "girls" are 4 weeks old. Some seem rather large compared to the others, some seem to have a little more comb development, and several have big, full tails already. Is it too soon to tell or are these good indicators of sex in White Leghorns?
I've read where there are different requirements, mostly nutritional, between hens that are laying eggs just for eating and hens that are laying eggs for hatching. What are the differences in the care and feeding of a breeding flock vs a non-breeding flock?
I recently read the standard for Delaware hens, and am trying to figure out if my girls come anywhere near it in terms of their topline. I'm not sure if I understand what the "cushion" refers to and would love to see pics of some good quality girls to compare mine to.
Any ideas what inter-poultry dynamics would cause hens to leave their coop for another? I have a third hen from the Delaware coop that has decided to sleep in the RSL's coop. The Barred Rock and first Delaware moved out a couple months ago.
Any suggestions to help heal this little girl's wound and get the feathers to grow fast? I don't know what started the assault, but when I saw her it was ugly... (I put some Neosporin on it before I took the picture, that's why it looks so juicy)
I'm hoping to order 25-50 with the idea of raising them in one of my stalls since it's still going to be cold for awhile. Is 144 sq ft going to be enough for them? If not, how soon do they feather out so I can put them outside in a 12'x16' pen? Do they need as much heat as ordinary chicks or...
Any ideas on "toys" for chicks stuck in brooders? It's gonna be awhile before it's warm enough to let them run around outside (the oldest are about a week old). I gave them some small leafed greens today that disappeared. Is that the best direction to go -- small edibles? I am putting some...
Of the 12 eggs that I set, 2 of the chicks had/have stripes (one died w/o pipping). Another, that was in a shell almost definitely produced by an RSL (based on size and appearance) doesn't have any stripes, and, for now anyway, looks like a Delaware. Here are pics of the one with stripes...
