I've been asked to write camps for this upcoming summer for my workplace, a science museum. The camp will be week-long half-day and full day camps for kids K-6th grades (divided into 3 age groups). I've written a basic plan for the camp, but if there are any teachers or genetics folks out there...
I got this pullet from a friend who paired her off-color silver Ameraucana rooster with a brown/gray Easter Egger hen. As far as I can tell, this pullet looks like a Silver Ameraucana. Could I use her in breeding silver Ameraucanas? The mom lays nice blue eggs.
A couple days ago, one of my free range roosters found a way to get in the coop/run with my LF pullets. (I found the problem in the run and fixed it.) Anyway I had found some cracked eggs before that I think the girls ate, but I usually have about the same number of eggs a day so I didn't think...
This year, I decided to buy my own birthday present (so I would get what I really want!)! I want to thank Sandy from Bat Cave Silkies for allowing me to purchase something I've been wanting for a while - a lavender silkie! This pretty boy's name is Nate, and he still has some filling out to do...
I have looked at many of the coop designs here on BYC, and did some searches, but did not find anything specific for a breeding coop - meaning, one that can be divided into sections to accommodate different ages, genders, and colors. I am planning to build a coop and run that I will divide into...
Just wondering if anyone has experimented with or kept data on polydactlysm in silkies. My pure silkies are not quite old enough to breed (all of mine have hatched from shipped eggs.) I ended up with a beautiful black silkie (I think cockerel - hasn't crowed yet though) with 4 toes on each...
Today when I was out tending to the critters, I discovered the cutest, most adorable little egg I've ever seen!!!
It's been like Easter at my barnyard, the layer girls are all getting cranked up and laying all over their coop. The teeny little white egg was in my silkie/d'uccle coop. I have...
Yeah, the incubator has been unplugged for a while, and sitting all lonely and egg-less. I told it that it would have to wait until spring before I put more eggs in it.
But then somehow last night I accidentally hit the "buy it now" button on an auction and DH accidentally sent some money via...
The rooster boys: "You don't expect us to walk out in that white stuff, do you?"
The goats: "You don't expect us to walk out in that white stuff, do you?"
The chicken girls, all snug in their coop, with a fresh armful of hay to play with:
The llamas: "Whoo-hoo!!! It's snowing!!!!"
She really did! My daughter and I went outside for a couple of hours to tend to the critters (cleaned the chicken coop and cleaned the llama poop that finally got thawed out enough to scoop) . . . came inside and my boxer had tore into the presents for my nephews and my neighbor...
This morning I went to my coop to give my girls fresh water and discovered my "special needs" girl, Cayenne, lying dead in the corner. Cayenne was a GLW pullet with severe cross beak that I've fed special feed every day since her beak problem developed and she was the sweetest thing.
I picked...
Actually the chicken was splash - in my dream.
I had the WEIRDEST dream last night. To set the stage - I live on 10 acres, surrounded by pasture, woods, and a large crop field. I dreamed that the land behind us - pasture land - was bought by someone new. And as I went out to tend my...
My DH built my homemade incubator and a separate hatcher (because I got eggs going all the time!). Instead of fiddling with water bowls and sponges, he built a controller and used ultrasonic humidifiers for the humidity. We've had a few mishaps with this design, but overall it works great and...
My cockerels were hatched in March. We got straight run chicks and ended up with 7 cockerels. At first we considered giving them away or eating them but "chickened out". They are all beautiful and different colors and patterns, sizes, etc. We have a farm with llamas and goats and the roosters...
I'm tired of stinky chickens in the house. They are adorable and sweet and even sit on my lap and watch tv (or I watch tv and they think chicken thoughts), but they are stinky. And they are 8 weeks old and the feather dust is incredible. My DH is going back to school 4 nights a week, plus...
I am a long time animal lover who has become obsessed with chickens. Up until now I have not bred animals, mostly rescued them (dogs, cats, llamas, goats). However, I do find genetics fascinating (majored in Biology) and now I am thinking about trying my hand at breeding quality silkies.
I...
Specifically, in silkies. I have a 2 month old chick that I suspect has split wing, but of course she is still feathering in.
Thanks for any help!

The baby in the forefront, looking at the camera. Hatched from a group of B/B/S shipped eggs - I'm a little confused by the tan tint. This photo was taken in daylight, no flash.
thanks for any input!!!

I'm in the midst of a hatch of 10 BBS silkie eggs. Two of the babies who just hatched have several partial pink toes - is this a disqualification or defect? I can tell already that they have awesome foot feathering. Should I not use them for breeding or would this breed out if crossed with other...
I have 11 eggs going into lockdown tomorrow, in my homemade hatcher. I have hatched two batches of eggs so far - the first I used paper towels in the hatching area - and a chick that stayed in there for several hours got splay leg (which corrected as soon as I put her on shavings in the...
